I've got accepted to a BA/DDS program, so that means I'm going to be in CAS for 3 years. I'm quite excited about attending NYU.

I'm an international student, and have never attended an US high school.. So, right now I'm in my home country, and won't be able to enter US until August 6th..

I'm not familiar with US book costs, but I've heard that class materials are really expensive. An international version I would be able to buy it for about $40~$60 whereas I'll have to pay more than $100 for the same book in US or Canada.

As for an asian, NYU's tuition fees cost really a ton.. so I'd like to save as much money as I can, thus, I'm trying to buy my class materials in international versions. (Well actually, it's really a mystery to me why the books cost more in their own home country and cheaper in other countries. Isn't it usually the reverse? Why would one charge more to his/her fellow countrymen?)

So.. here comes the real question : Could someone tell me which books are used for which classes?

These are the classes that I'm to attend in my first year of college:

Principles of Biology I & II
General Chemistry I & II
General Chemistry Lab I & II
Calculus I

Writing the Essay

I would really appreciate if someone could help me get an answer this question, for it really matters a lot (and is worth a lot ^^) to me. I'm feeling really sorry for my parents that they have to pay such an incredible tution fee for it's hard for international students to get loans.. So I've got to save as much money as I can where it's possible.

PS. Sorry if there are some grammatically uncorrect sentences.. I'm working on, though. ^^

youll probably have better luck asking this over at like, the nyu livejournal community. most people on this board are going to be incoming freshman like you.

However, I can tell you that chances are you will have to buy the Calculus I and Writing the Essay books from the NYU bookstore - I think both courses use materials published by NYU itself. The lab manuals for Gen. Chem. I and II are also NYU publications - they are usually bundled with the textbook, but you should ask if the bookstore will sell you those separately. As for Principles of Bio, this year we used the 7th edition of Campbell and Reece's biology textbook (http://wps.aw.com/wps/media/access/Pearson_Default/1663/1703422/login.html) - I'm sure that as soon as a new edition comes out, you'll have to buy that one.

You're taking a chance buying any books ahead of time. Wait until you get the syllabi for your courses and check the listings on the NYU bookstore site. With some courses it's best to wait til classes begin because often not all of the books listed will be necessary. Don't get too far ahead of yourself, even if you think you're saving money.

This will give you whatever the professor has asked the bookstore to stock for his/her class this fall.

Although I agree with previous posters about the fact that some books aren't really required, I feel for your classes (with the exception of WTE), it's pretty likely that none of the books are going to be optional. So, if you don't mind taking on the risk..

So, I guess I'll just have to wait until the courses of 2006 are posted officially...; So I'll just have to tighten my budget as much as I can. Seems I'll have to hope to be able to get an used book on amazon or upper students. (But Biology book, I might be able to take from here.. I'm searching the nyu bookstore, thanks for the trick!!)

Thank you very much for all your advices, has been a great help. ^_^
