A Question regarding my freshman Son

good morning all
nice forum here, a question i have regarding my freshman son. he wants to transfer from one high school to another. I guess because of his friends and all. His grades are 3.0 or better. Now my question is this: Should he wait till Sept to transfer or is there any consequences on transferring in march, already 65% into the school year. How do colleges look at a mid year transfer?
thanks

don't worry so much about what colleges might think....think about courses, and finals, and credits, and registration for the fall

people move, change schools, why do you think it would matter much to a college about a freshman?

Agreed with the above reply. Change schools if you have a good reason to, when you have a good reason to. I moved during high school (once during ninth grade, and once during tenth grade). Schools get confused by that, but just deal with record transfers and so forth as those issues come up.

My guess is that he'd be better off transferring so he can start the school year at the new high school and consequently be on track with all of the coursework.

Depending on your school's calendar, your son could be at risk of not getting credit for the work that he has done this term.

You would be suprised at the number of students and families who change schools due to moves, safety and transportation issues only to lose their credits for the whole semester of work. The hardest thing I have to do during the course of my day is explain a new student and his/her family that based on the date of the transfer they will not get credit for the term. Since they did not complete the term at the old school, they have essentially wasted the past term, which will have to be repeated. In NYC the only time I have not seen this to be a problem is when students transfer to NYC schools in January and they finished the term at their home school.

The later in the term he tries to transfer, the greater the risk is that he will not have seat time at the new school, and will probably be marked as a late entry student could could not be evaluated by the teacher in that school because he does not have the seat time required to get a grade. There could also be a problem if the new school does not offer the same courses at the same time your current high school does so your child could end up in the middle of the semester with totally new classes.

While some schools will consider your grades from his previous school, they do not have to and will grade him based on the work he has done in the new school.

You should check with your school district to find out what is the last day that a student could sucessfully transfer and still receive course credit.

If there is no good reason to transfer (ex. saftey, medical hardship, transportation hardship or family moving) I would recommend waiting and having him transfer at the end of summer for the new school year.
