A question that's been bugging me a while...

Hi everyone,

I took the January SAT last year, and that is the one that I will be sending to colleges. I received a 640-640-740, on the M-CR-WR scale. It's not in the 2300's like you CCer's have, but I am pleased with my score.

Now, the reason for my thread is that I've always had this gut feeling deep down that I should have left critical reading multiple choice questions blank, instead of just answering them. I was well advised to skip if you don't have a clue at all on any question, and I did that on the math; however, I found it very hard to skip questions on passage based (not sentence completion) critical reading. Whenever I thought about answers, I always had an "inkling," albeit not a very strong one. Thus, I guessed when I wasn't 100% positive on many MC passage based CR questions.

Here's a shot of my score report:

<a href="http://img.skitch.com/20090930-k3na6cybefe7skg1r7j8pe7ee1.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img.skitch.com/20090930-k3na6cybefe7skg1r7j8pe7ee1.jpg</a></p>

If you had to estimate, what would my score have been if I had not guessed as much as I did on the passage based CR? It's annoying, because I had an 18/19 on the SC! Why oh why did I get those 11 questions wrong when I should have left them blank?!?

Thanks!

“Thus, I guessed when I wasn’t 100% positive on many MC passage based CR questions.”

This is a statistically solid decision. If you can eliminate two or more answers, guessing is the right way to go.

Think about it this way – are you going to retake the test? If not, then there’s no point in asking yourself this question.

Why would you want your question to be answered?

You’ll only be kicking yourself even more than it seems you already are.

if you left those 11 questions blank, you would add 3 more points to the raw score which would then be a 55. after looking at some Official conversion charts, your score then would be around 670-680.

But, you can never blame yourself for something like this. Congratulations on the SC btw, how did you prepare for it?
