this might seem like a stupid question for a high school junior to be asking but what does it mean to be a valedictorian? and how does a person become one? does a student have to go to that high school for all 4 years to become one?

valedictorian is the first student in the rank..

to become one u have to receive the best grades all the way through high school

Not all schools require you attend the same school all 4 years. I think at my school it's 6 semesters or something. At other schools Valedictorian means you held a 4.0 (or equivalent) all through high school. Generally, though, it's given to the top student in the graduating class.
