A quick, quick question!

Is UMich econ (LSA) better than IU finance (Kelley) in terms of job placement/recruitment and overall education quality? Lets say, hypothetically, you graduate in the upper third of both of these schools.

yes it is.

I actually think they're comparable. Kelley is a fine business school. Ross is up there, but you're asking about the LAS. If your more interested in finance, go finance instead of economics. I hate how people maneuver around business with economics. A majority of the schools I've looked with an undergraduate business program keep their economics major in the LAS, where I believe it belongs.

comparable...not exactly.

UMICH econ is clearly better than kelley.
UMICH econ is #11 in the country whereas kelley is #10 undergrad business.
That might sound great, but when you consider that: harvard, yale, princeton, dartmouth, columbia, brown, duke, UCHICAGO, and many, many more do not have undergrad business programs but do have econ programs...kelley would fall into the 30's or 40's
UMICH holding on to #11 with all those ivies is pretty damn impressive

Well I'm at Kelley (finance). That being said, would it be worthwhile to transfer to LSA assuming I got in?

A few things: Just to clarify, Michigan econ is #11 for its Ph.D program, not undergrad. A good Ph.D program usually trickles down to the undergrad program, but really it just means that the econ faculty are good researchers in their field (if they teach undergrads, that's great, but it's all it means) and that your TA's are learning from good authority. Unfortunately, it says nothing about teaching/lecturing quality and, just as important for many students, recruiting quality. So forget about the departmental ranking and focus on the overall school.

Anyway, Michigan LSA is good (yes, better than Kelley), but I will say that its career office is quite lacking.

if you're already at kelley, i would only transfer if you're really looking for a different college experience. ann arbor is awesome.
