I signed up for "A Running Conversation" for my Freshman Fall TIDES seminar. It seems like a fun way to see the city, get outdoors, and be active. However, I have some concerns about it . . . I'm fairly athletic (played soccer, lacrosse, etc.) but I am by no means a super-skilled runner. I've run a few 5-ks and one 8-k but I've never run more than 5 miles and I run about a 9-minute mile pace.

How intense is the "running" part of this seminar? Do I have to run fast (like a 7-minute mile pace) or far (as in farther than 7 miles)? Exactly how far and fast do the students and professor of this seminar run?

I love to be active and outside, but I don't want to be lagging behind and holding back the group. Would it be a good idea to change my TIDES or do you think my lack of running ability will still suffice? Please tell me what you know about this TIDES and what either you or your friends have experienced with it.

I would wager you are as good or better a runner than others that will be in the course. I am sure the idea is not to be “competitive”, but instead is to get some exercise in while talking about different things. Hard to talk much if you are totally out of breath, which even the best runners would be if the pace was too fast.

But if you are concerned, email the prof and ask. No need to be shy, it is a fair question.

Just curious lololeau - how did you sign up at this point and where can I find a list of course offerings? I only saw a 2012-13 list online. Thanks - sounds very interesting!

Bloomy - you can go to [Tulane University - Class Schedule](Tulane University Schedule of Classes) and just make sure the top right corner reads “2013 Fall”. It should default to that. Then you can look at course offerings in all kinds of ways by using the filters. One of the filters is for TIDES courses; they even separate out the business TIDES courses from the rest of them.

Students who attended the first Honors weekend last weekend met with advisors and signed up for classes. A stroke of marketing genius by Tulane.

Anyone can fool around with the site and it’s a good idea to learn how to navigate it so that during Orientation the student already has an idea of the course s/he wishes to take.
Go here: [Tulane University - Class Schedule](Tulane University Schedule of Classes)
As an example, click “Anthropology” in the Subject Area, left side of the page
Bottom right: click Search “All Courses”
All Anthropology courses will come up. Take note of “campus.” You want “uptown.” Also take note of prerequisites.
Pick one of the Anthropology classes. ie ANTH 1010-01. It will have the Prof’s name, how many seats are in the class and how many seats are still open. Click “add” (far right) to add it to your schedule
As you continue to do this and add courses, they will appear on the right side. If there is a conflict, it will tell you.
Since you haven’t logged on, this is just for fun
Having fun yet?

I see that many of the courses have just 4 seats + some even say that there are no longer seats available. Will this be a problem since my DS won’t get to sign up for classes until mid June???

Yes, pretty much. TIDES classes are small, but not that small! There are still cases where students cannot get the section they want, and sometimes not the course either, although the latter is pretty rare. But compared to most schools, Tulane does really well in that area.

I went to Honors Weekend and signed up for “Martial Arts for the Performing Arts” (Stunts for the stage) for my TIDES class. Hilarious! There are sooo many interesting TIDES classes to choose from. We were told that the TIDES classes stay small with about 15 kids in each class. I’m guessing they offer at least a few different times for each class, so the number available may just be for that specific time.

Thanks everyone so much for your replies! I feel a lot more confident about being in the seminar after reading your thoughts :-)

Special thanks to fallenchemist for pointing out the article-- it answered all my questions! To answer the questions as to how I’ve already signed up for classes: I did indeed attend the March Honors Weekend and met with an advisor there.

Anyway, I’m super excited (and not worried anymore) about participating in this TIDES if I am able/choose to go to Tulane (hopefully). . . Thanks again!
