A.S. in Computer Science

Hello!

During high school I took dual credit courses but I never really though of what to do with them since I took corresponding AP / IB exams with them. But one of my friends just noticed it would only take him 2 more classes to get an associates in Computer science. And it would take me 4 more to my surprise because we finished the core and main courses during dual credit or at our home 4 year universities.

We both aim to be design engineers upon graduation and we have extensive programming experience with personal projects and app development but neither of us have every received an interview for a coding oriented job we applied for . That was the main reason we chose to not go into to computer science for our majors. But now I’m debating if I should just take the 4 classes and add the degree to my resume. Each one can be done online and I’d only need a C to earn it .

Would any employer / recruiter put value in an associates degree in Computer Science for a role where coding may be beneficial? Or would it be over shadowed by my mechanical engineering degree? Or is their a better way to show programming interests besides listing projects and GitHub expository ?

Some day, I’ll find someone who can adequately explain what a “design engineer” is and does.

Four more classes is not a trivial amount of coursework. It will be close to 10% of your entire curriculum. Employers won’t care about the paper. They will care about the utility of your coursework. Twelve more hours of CS will be 12 less hours of ME, and my guess is little of it will count towards your MS. Sure some CS, especially something like C++ can be useful to a ME, especially if you continue on a mechatronics path. Do you really need formal coursework though, and 12ish more hours at that? Remember, anything you say yes to means saying no to something else.
