Prayers to the students, the University and families!

What is going on?!

It’s funny… I have heard people say that they go to private/religious schools because they’re “safer” than publics. This just goes to show that no one is immune from people like this. It’s such a tragedy on so many levels.

My thoughts go to those who have had their lives lost and shattered today.

IMO, some of the most susceptible schools are those who have a general feel good attitude about the world. With all that peace and love, nothing could happen right? The fact is you can’t live in fear, but schools should certainly be prepared for the fact it can happen anywhere, at anytime to anyone.

I just heard about this. Very sad. I had never heard of Oikos University before, though we live in the area. Must be fairly new? Small? And no, there is no such thing as a completely safe place. People at religious universities can be targeted just as easily as anyone, anywhere.

@mstee - Oikos opened in 2004. It is small, it offers courses in four fields; theology, music, nursery and Asian medicine.

I was actually in the area when the shooting happened. I have a friend who lives in East Oakland, just a few minutes from the college, and I stayed at hers last night. We were actually about to head out, when the news broke, and of course we stayed indoors when we heard that at the time, the shooter was still at large.

Horrible news, absolutely horrible, and it’s magnified when it happens on your doorstep.

My hearts goes out to all affected.

Suspect has been arrested, according to [6 dead, 3 injured, gunman caught in college shooting](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/04/02/BABJ1NTM3Q.DTL&tsp=1)

They’ve upped the total dead to 7. :frowning: Tragic.

According to the article the shooter was in his 40’s. This is not a traditional campus, not that it makes it any less shocking and sad. But it does explain why no one had heard of it despite living in the area.

The more details that come out about this, the sicker I feel. He lined them up and shot them execution style. I just can’t even imagine.

Oh and apparently he went and bought the gun not very long before this. He had been planning for weeks. I have no idea whether or not he was allowed to own a gun or when he was given a permit to have the gun.

An expelled Student!!

Do you think schools will think twice when they expell a student?

This was an expelled nursing (not nursery, lol) student. He was in his 30’s. I texted my DS and his GF as soon as I heard, as they too live in the area. Fortunately they are fine. They were not familiar with the school.

I don’t think them being religious had anything to do with the shooting. I think it’s a combination of the urban location and the fact they expelled a mentally troubled student. And the akin would seem more akin to a community college, where everyone leaves after they go home. I doubt anyone picked this school because of safety. (It is in Oakland after all)

Oakland! The location is only 10-15 miles away from my house, but I have no knowledge of that college…I have warned all my Korean friends, never fire any employees, they might come back shoot you… lol

BTW, I almost sold that shopping center in Alameda, 7 years ago…

There are plenty of fine, safe and lovely places in Oakland. Such sweeping generalizations about “safety” are really unnecessary.

Neither necessary nor funny.

Ditto what Jym626 and romanigypsyeyes said.
