Tonight, I realized I made a mistake on one of my apps, putting down "regional" instead of "local." (I always thought it was a regional award, but my mom says otherwise.) I don't want the college to think I'm lying and reject me. Will they understand that this simple human error? What's the best way to approach it?

If it was a small part of your application, they will probably not notice. It's hard to imagine that this one activity would be such a significant part of the application that they would reject you because of it.

Also, I have seen competitions for which "regional" is the smallest unit (that is, regional, then state, then national, etc.). If you had falsely described yourself as the national winner of a major contest then it could well matter - as it is I wouldn't worry about it.

sometimes it's hard to imagine what is noticable and what isn't. if one of the adcom is familiar with a particular competition, it might well send a flag up.

Yes, it's a very small part of my app and doesn't really tie into my other ECs (though it is something I like to do.) My worry about sending a correction is that it will reflect negatively on me at the college, making me look like I'm careless/ignorant. Also, I have awards I want to notify the colleges of (received them after submitting the app). Could I do both in the same letter?

Sorry for the hassale, but one more question...If everything goes according to plan (and this is an "if," though I'm really trying), I should be receiving my Gold Award in early December. Should I wait until then and send everything in one letter?

I think it would be best. I also don't think colleges will care that much. It's definately not as huge as the difference between, say, regional and state or state and national.

I made a slight mistake too. On one of my ECs (for one of my lower-ranked ones on the Common App) I put down that I was an officer from 04 to 06, a typo that should have been 04-05. Colleges realize small things like that won't make or break you.

wolfpiper: just out of curiosity, is this Scholastic Art & Writing? Because if it is, I really, really don't think anyone is going to hunt down the regional awards list. If you say you've won an art award, for example, and have included a slide of your work so they can see it's good, that is probably all the proof they'll want that you do this kind of work (and hence will not go searching through contest lists).

wolfpiper will fret if the error stands because she is an honorable person. Yes, note the correction, the Gold award and whatever else you have amassed by then. I would send a hard-copy letter to your regional adcom.

Definitely note the correction since it will clearly make you more comfortable. It's always better to be honest, and you won't have to worry about having any problems. Since you are already providing an update, there is no reason not to make the correction.

Also, it's better to send the update now, and if you win the additional award, you can always write in at the time.
