A social problem over which I do not seem to have control.

I am college student with a unfortunate condition of hyperhidrosis - my palms and feet sweat all the time. This is really inhibits my ability to socialize. Whenever I meet new people or greet old friends it gets really embarrassing.

I am not really sure if anything can be done to minimize the effects of this conditions but any advice will be truly appreciated.

Thanks!

Botox injections?

Thanks for the reply!

I googled it and it seems promising. I am researching more about it right now.

I had a friend with that condition, and she had some sort of prescription antiperspirant that she put on her gloved hands overnight.

I googled quick, and here are a list of the treatments used for this condition:

[Hyperhidrosis Treatment - Mayo Clinic](http://www.mayoclinic.org/hyperhidrosis/treatment.html)

Hey, that happens to me, too. I just wipe my palm on my pants before shaking hands. And use my own game controllers. Girls don’t like it, though.

Thanks HyperJulie for the link!

ManOfFaith: That is exactly what I do now. But wiping off pants does not completely dries my palms and I do not think it looks good if you do it every time you shake someone’s hand. But that’s the best I can do for now.

Shaking hands will soon be out of the question with the transmission of swine flu germs. Lucky for you!

Yes…hyperhidrosis can definitely cripple your social life. During my senior year of high school, this condition got really bad (I wore gloves a lot and pretended to wear it for style or that it was cold). Thing was that people didn’t really understand this condition so obviously they get rather disgusted by it. If someone wanted to shake my hand when it was sweaty, I obviously can’t reject someone’s handshake so I had to shake the person’s hand. When they realized it was sweaty, I will just make up an excuse like “I just wash my hand” or “I have been sweating.” I even try putting baby powder on my hands which makes it dry for like 5 minutes but then doesn’t help for long term. I remember when I go to social events, I will just pretend I have OCD (or at least a germaphobe like Howie Mandel…which I kinda am in some ways like I don’t like touching door handles in public) so I don’t have to shake someone’s hand when sweaty. I remember I would hug people instead of shaking their hands.

But ya, for treatment, I tried iontophoresis (you used electric currents to stop the sweat duct) but it only worked for couple weeks. I have also seen a dermatologist and she prescribed drysol. I must say, drysol helped a lot (and wasn’t just temporary) and it’s not expensive like botox is. Because of its expensiveness, I never try botox cuz I think it was like 500 dollars a hand.

ugh I have hyperhidrosis too…only under my arms, though, so it always looks like I have BO…however there is an antiperspirant called “CertainDri”. I have friends who have used it effectively on their hands. It’s only like $10 at Walmart…

I have this too. If I get even slightly tense my hands and feet start sweating like crazy. They sweat right now as I type this. It’s not just social issues that cause it, but anything. Even the most minor things.

I’ve never really had it cause me problems socially though… it mostly just bothers me as a hygienic thing. No one really notices my hands sweat unless I shake hands with them. Even then, it’s not a big deal.
