The state of Michigan just went from 3 USAMO qualifiers last year up to 17 this year. Congrats guys! Granted, they expanded the number of qualifiers nationwide and all, but that's still a huge jump even with that considered. I noticed there were 7 seniors on the list, so if you're out there (i know one of you is), great job, and I hope to see you at the University!! Anyone have ideas on how many will be Wolverines?

what are you talking about?

Thanks!

The 7 seniors, I know two are going to UM, one to MIT, one to Stanford, one to Harvard. I'm not sure about the last two, but I should know soon.

Thanks for the update tetra. Intended majors of these two students? You may have noticed on the undergrad math website that USAMO kids tend to fair quite well here (our freshman got 2nd in the school on Putnam and first on the UG math competition). We're building a solid team most def.

but returning you to my original question...what the hell are you talking about. lol USAMO...that doesn't mean anything to us peons who don't spend every waking moment w/ numbers (directed at chibears..with love O:-)

KB

yeah i have no clue what USAMO is

USA Math Olympiad

Pretty much what those who dominate the AMC 12 and AIME move onto

A short summary of the USAMO process:
Every year there is a competition known as the International Mathematics Olympiad, and tons of countries send teams. The process for qualification in the United States involves first taking the AMC. You move on in the process if you score a 100 out of 150 or over on this test. Next is the AIME, 15 questions of numerical free response in 3 hours. If you score somewhere over 200 points combined (AMC score plus 10 x AIME score), you qualify for the USAMO (USA math olympiad exam), with some preference shown for underclassmen to develop their skills. The top 20 or so scorers from this exam go to a summer camp known as MOSP and the top 6 of these students compete on the US team at the IMO. This year, the amount of people who take the USAMO expanded from 250 people nationwide to 400 people. 17 of these were from Michigan this year, a huge improvement over last year's showing of 3 in the field of 250. Around 100 of the 400 are seniors, and at least two of those hundred are coming to Michigan next year. Hurray!

Which one's coming to MIT?
-jhawk

yeah, a certain freshman here from michigan who knows most of the math kids in michigan was curious to know who was going where also, but i dunno if that's fit for CC. tetra can PM i guess.

Vivek.

Any others you guys want to know?

Which one's coming to Stanford tetra???

We totally could've another 1 or 2 USAMO qualifiers last year if my school would've kept doing the AMC. Assuming I didn't bomb it. Like I did on the MMPC senior year. ::cries::

I can't believe the one freshmen did that well on Putnam and UM^2C. Maybe next year I'll actually remember to register and make it my goal to beat him.

Which one, dilks? Two freshmen were in the top 3. We've got a strong class. Are you really that confident you would have made USAMO dilks? Only 3 people from MI made it last year. It's quite the feat, my friend. Don't make it sound so easy that your school alone would have sent another 1 or 2 (making about a third of the state's representation).

I figured JM was in the top 3...who else?

I'm being slightly optimistic about my school sending 1 or 2, because you can't really prove me wrong =P. Unless you build a time machine. Which brings a whole set of paradoxes into play.

Yeah. he was the only senior. there was a soph and a junior last year too I think. Just go to the UNL site and check last year's qualifiers.

4 of them go to my school : ). 2 seniors, 1 going to MIT and 1 going to Harvard, 1 freshman, and 1 8th grader.

8th grade shouldn't count haha. Anyway, my school > your school.

What's more sad about michigan is that despite the fact that we had tons of qualifiers, our scores on the usamo were pretty poor. No one was even close to getting honorable mention.

Holy crap, I leave this thing for two days and I miss a nerdy math conversation. I've been out, hanging out with friends, at parties, doing stupid things, not predominantly talking about math for awhile...and this is what I miss. Tonight, I almost stayed home to work math problems. However, 15 minutes into it, I thought to myself, "Christine, you're a loser. It's a Saturday night, your soccer team just won the state championship, people are out celebrating...and you're sitting at home working math problems when you're out of class and have no obligations." So I left my desk and cried...I'm going to miss my class of 70 people...I've known them since the day I was born, we've gone through the toughest times together, and...tear.

ANYWAYSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS...no USAMO qualifiers, but 11 AIME qualifiers at my school. I just kind of felt like posting on this thread... Anyone been to the USAMO?
