hi everyone
as i stated, i have a stupid worry in my mind
i was accepted by Tulane recently (applied for RD)
but becoz of my stats
i'm afraid that there might be something wrong happening...

so here's my stats (which i am not proud of)
* SAT I : 1480/2400 :(
* SAT IIs: 630 World History, 660 Biology(M), 770 Italian
* APs: currently taking AP Psych, AP World Hist and AP Bio
* GPA: GPA 3.16 UW (it went up a little after the first term in g12) -no class rank
* ECs listed on app: IT Club (president), Yearbook team, Debate team, senior project manager, prom commitee
* Essays: pretty good (about diversity, and my life having an italian dad and an american mom)

i was born in US, although my mother language is italian, i filled in 'english' as my mother tongue, so i didn't submit my toefl score

so as you see, my stats are horrifying
and tulane's acceptance isn't even conditional
i was just wondering is there any possibility that they send the acceptance to the wrong person? (but on the letter, it IS my official name... and i'm pretty sure my name isn't that common)

i know i should be glad instead of being worried
but without excellent stats and accidentally got in a wonderful school did make me feel quite unexpected

It happens… colleges do send out the wrong letters. There are a few I know of who have a history of doing so. If they made a mistake, they’ll probably catch it themselves… You might get a letter in a few weeks saying you were rejected, but I doubt that will happen. Have some confidence!! It’s not very likely they sent you the wrong letter. I’d wait to see what happens… see if you get anything else in the mail… Also, if you’re planning on enrolling, submit your deposit. If they actually did make a mistake, they’d probably let you know at that point. But I honestly think you’re okay!

To be honest… unless you are a nationally ranked athlete of some sort, I think you may have justification to worry. Your SAT scores are no where near the 25%-75% range (1850 - 2090) Sounds crazy but either they somehow just assumed the 1480 SAT score was on a 1600 scale, or they just sent you the wrong letter. Your best bet would be the former, because this is less likely to be caught. If they just mistakenly sent you the wrong letter, then this is likely to be noticed.

The thing I might worry about is your ability to thrive at Tulane. Your SAT scores and GPA indicate that you may have some difficulty. Just something to consider.

Are you currently in the US, or are you in Italy? Has your education been primarily in the US or in Italy? I ask this because you mention that you took the TOEFL but didn’t submit the score. It is entirely possible that Tulane likes you because you are bi-national.

Since you seem to think that you might have received the wrong letter, it is perfectly OK to have your HS guidance counselor give them a call.

i’m currently in US, but i spent almost my whole life living in italy
i transferred from the italian system to an american high school after i finished grade 10 in italy
so i had some difficulities in grade 11 catching up, and basically i got no time to study for the SAT
my grade 12 gpa is getting better, i got 3.6 for the mid-term, but my cumulative gpa is just 3.16 uw :(

is it a bad idea for me to choose to study in Tulane? (btw my intended major is political science)

I don’t think it’s a bad idea and I wouldn’t listen to people ‘worrying’ about your ability to cope with the workload. It sounds like you had a hard time adjusting to life in the States, but your recent grades indicate that once you overcome the language barrier, you’ll be fine.

Personally, I’d just submit the deposit straight away. I don’t think you got the wrong letter, but even if you did, that’s Tulane’s problem, not yours.

You are going to be fine at Tulane if you decide to study there. Since you just moved back to the US, you must have sent some of your Italian school records along with your US transcripts. The admissions office certainly took that into consideration.

The big question though is how your family will pay for your education. Talk with your parents about that so you can make the best choice by May 1.

^ I didnt question his ability to cope. If it is a mistake, I suggested he should at least consider whether it would be the best school for him to thrive (meaning if you were accidently accepted to Harvard, does not mean everyone would be better off just going with it). And getting accepted to a school with routine EC’s when your SAT score is almost 400 points below the 25% percentile is incredibly rare - I have never seen anything even close except by URMs or athletes.

That being said, his SAT II’s are okay, and his grades seem to be improving, so if he feels comfortable with his AP courses currently, I agreee that he will likely do just fine at Tulane.

thank you for your answers
basically, my parents were thrilled and they told everybody in my family (well, if you know about ITALIAN FAMILY…) that i’m accepted by Tulane, and if it turns out that i got the wrong letter, it will be a totally embarrassment!

i guess i can get some sort of need-based aid… or i can go for the student loan anyways
i wouldn’t mind paying those debt off in the coming few years, at least i think it worths the debt… and plus i don’t really wanna go to U of Arizona and ASU (my state schools)

If you are persuaded by the latest research into the actual monetary benefit of attending an elite school (apparently offers no future earnings improvement):

if i call Tulane, and let’s say if it’s the case that they assumed my SAT score was based on the 1600 scale… but then after i call them, they find out that it’s actually based on the 2400 scale, will they revoke my acceptance? :(

i’m so scared of that will happen… Tulane is my dream school (and i have never expected that i can get in until i got the acceptance letter)!!

and plus money is not really a worry now, because my grandparents back in italy agreed to support my studies by paying 2/3 of the total fee
i love them :D

^Nice grandparents - I see why you love them. If you believe your english capabilities (you did not mention your toefl score) are sufficient and improving, and you are confident in your current AP classes, and you really want to go to Tulane… then I personally would not rattle the cage. Assume they want you as much as you want to go there, and submit your deposits and start getting pumped about college… you will do great… and congratulations.
