A full needs met school is tough with a 3.3 GPA at this point. Costwise SUNY schools are the best bet unless you can get an athletic scholarship. There is a STEM scholarship at SUNYs for top 10 percent of the class for NY State residents so not sure where his 3.3 puts him in terms of his ranking at his school, and I didn’t see a major of interest in your post.
Son got a full tuition scholarship at Oenonta, but he had a 98 or so overall average. I think they give scholarships under that level as well though so check out their website.
On SUNYs, then, this is what USNWR had to say about one of them, Geneseo:
“Walking on Main Street in [the town of] Genseo is like stepping into a vintage postcard. The 19th-century architecture of the storefronts, in an area designated a National Historic Landmark Village, seems to meld into the 220-acre campus of SUNY-Geneseo.”
with your income and possibly having 3 kids at college at the same time I would check out all the private schools that meet full need. look for schools that have a lot more girls than guys, look for schools that would see a NYer as geographic diversity, look for schools with big endowments. just keep putting your info into net price calculators, and i bet you find that you get good aid, as long as you find schools that aren’t the super competitive ones. also, i remember coming across a scholarship for pastor’s kids at some school i was looking into. you might want to google “scholarships for clergy children” or something like that
I’ll have three kids in college at the same time, but for only one year (one hopes) so I’m plugging in numbers for two in college at the same time to start. And yes, suggestions for full need private schools for a late blooming boy with not the most rigorous schedule possible and a 3.3 - 3.5 are also welcome. You’re right, there are quite a few that meet full need and I’m working through the data for those. I’m ignoring the Maine ones (hard sell for a kid who despises winters) and looking further south.
Brandeis’ coach sent a letter to DS, and their NPC looks good, but I’m not sure if that will be too competitive. Thinking here not just about getting in, but trying to have DS in a place where he won’t be overwhelmed academically if he’s also running track. Plus, snow!
another vote for looking a UB (I’m class of 80something)-- but also Buff State- Buff state has more of an artsy, downtown feel that may be to his liking.
