A tad distressed, need a little reassurance.

So I'm very sorry if this is annoying anyone, and it's probably been asked before, but is employment a viable alternative to community service? Since freshman year all of my summers and parts of my falls and springs have been dedicated to my family's business, of which me and my mother are the only two employees. Would this be an acceptable alternative to Community Service, and if so, how would I articulate this on an application?

To be fair, I'll have a LITTLE community service by the time I graduate, due to school requirements, but nowhere near the hundreds upon hundreds of hours that I've seen here on CC.

Thanks in advance!

My daughter also had very little community service because of her dance schedule - 10 hrs/year. I would expect most atheletes are also in the same boat. It is great you have been working at your family's business. It shows you have been very productive while you are in HS. There is an article on how soup kitchens are sick and tired of seeing high school students helping out to just beef up their college applications. Write about your experience in working in your family business.

why would you be distressed? working for a family business looks fantastic (guessing). I mean so long as your 'family business' is totally legit (if you know what i mean) then yeah it shows a bunch of positive things about you.

Oh, did I not mention we were in the Columbian drug trade? Haha, kidding. Thanks for the great answers.

Would be an interesting essay.

Employment will do just fine. Here - have a plaque with the words "Don't Panic" written on it in large, friendly letters.

Unless you are applying to H or CMU the community hours will not really
impact you as long as you have ~ 40 hrs in high school typically. H
is particualr about where you volunteered and the quality of your
volunteering more than the quantity.
