Long time lurker on the forums, but current rising sophomore. I decided to register to answer any questions regarding Tepper specifically for interested and admitted students. Not enough Tepper kids to go around in general...let alone on on CC :(

How was the freshman year workload?

Did you get into all the classes you wanted?

What business organizations are your part of?

Should I take Microeconomics and Accounting at a state school? I heard that the teachers for those two courses are horrendous.

Are you happy with the small class size of 80-90 students?

Heh you could answer those yourself I believe :p

Freshman year workload was pretty lax relative to a full blown tech major. Still work to be done, especially in 15110 with Kosbie. I myself found programming to be a rewarding experience, but a lot of kids cough econ majors cough washed out. Even WITH procrastination all nighters were a pretty rare occurrence for me.

Registration wasn’t a big deal, but I’ve been blessed with early and mid morning registrations so my opinion will clearly differ. Reservations for Tepper students meant I could bypass some waitlists completely, which I did with great joy :D

Undergraduate Finance Association, Undergraduate Investment Club are my main ones. Once Carnegie Mellon Capital Management gets going within UFA I’ll look into it more.

Accounting is a class anyone can grit their teeth and get through just fine. SIO indicates that the teacher for 70122 is TBA, so who knows, maybe the trend of terrible accounting teachers will change.
Groeger for Micro was death and should be avoided at all costs.

The class size is cozy and you can pretty much identify every Tepper student within your class in a month. I don’t think the students in other schools at CMU can handle so many Tepper kids anyway haha…we seem to have a rep for being loud, stupid partiers

Hi, I was just admitted under ED and thank you so much for making this thread. I have recently been regretting my decision to ED to cmu. Mainly, I am afraid of the workload but mostly whether or not I will have fun. Here are my questions

How are the students at tepper compared to the rest of cmu? ( I fear that I will be surrounded by nerds)

How is the social life ( people to hang out with, places to go, parties etc)?

Attractiveness of people ( is it as bad as college p ra w ler says)?

Is there a quiz when choosing a roommate. If so, how well does it match your personalities?

What is the recruiting like at Tepper? thanks!

how much work is there? will i be able to have fun most nights or end up working for a good portion of the night ?

The Tepper workload is REALLY relaxed. Seriously. Not to say that it’s a complete breeze, but when you look at some math, CS, ECE kids etc, you’ve got it pretty good and they’ll probably hate you for it lolz. You can make it harder if you want by doubling in something technical, but the core curriculum is very easy.

I had hella spare time my freshman year as a Tepper student and managed to pull off a 3.8+ no issue.

CMU has plenty of nerds, but the general population consists of smart, well adjusted people. If you are a smart, decent person you will find friends unless you are an obvious ******bag.

Definitely not a school for pretty people, but its not like everyone is fugly. Many of the girls (and guys) simply don’t go out of their way to look exceptionally nice.

hi cmutsbkid,

i’m highly interested in tepper and am considering applying ED without financial aid (international student anyway).

i know that CMU is a very science-focused college. But given that i’m considering to pursue business and probably a minor in design, will my chances be greatly diminished if i am a humanities-inclined person? i took sciences for 4 years, but in high school, all my subjects are lit, history, french and the like and my cv, though acceptable, consists largely of essay/speech contests and NOTHING science related. the only relevant thing is that i’m quite good at math and working on it as well, 790 for sat1 and 2. i don’t think i would have much difficulties fitting in, i mean, people have lots of things to relate and connect to besides tech and science right.

so the only concern is that does the school only look for science-oriented kids? even for tepper, they encourage applicants to take a SAT2 science subject, but i took lit 750, which again might be irrelevant if they look for sci kids.

do you think “humanities” kids stand a chance at CMU as well? i know they have the H&SS, but this is tepper we’re talking about.

hope to hear from you. thnx in advance.

you took french as a h2 o_o wow

@Kindanerd: Your concentration in the humanities will not hurt your chances if you are an excellent student overall. What may hurt your chances is a complete lack of science courses as indicated here [Admission > Academic Requirements](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University) . These aren’t hard requirements but the point is that they’re looking for well rounded students. If your high school offers no science courses at all, you might want to note that somewhere or call admissions to clarify your situation.

That being said, Tepper is PRIMARILY a technically oriented program and its heavily biased towards mathematically inclined students with an interest in finance. There is minimal science required in the curriculum, just one class and it’s usually very very easy.

Well i guess i meet the sci requirements since high school in the states last 3 years while in singapore it lasts only 2 years, so i’d have fulfilled that prerequisite of 1 year in my middle school.

Erm besides finance, hows their management departments? I’m pretty interested in the manufacture management and consulting track which i read was ranked highly?

Tepper’s general management curriculum is quite weak, but the manufacturing/supply chain stuff is really quite excellent due to CMU’s overall strength at math and its technical foundations. It’s not very popular though, only about ~7 students every year out of a class of 90+ choose that track.
