Does it bother any one else when “achieve” is used by itself without any explanation? I can’t really explain it but it makes it sound like “achieving” is the whole point, the field and intent don’t matter. Idk I guess its just personal associations with people who use achieve in that way. You know I also don’t like “top” being used by itself as an adjective, don’t know why either.

Anyway thread subject, I don’t drink regularly personally but I have done some drinking and most of my friends do. And I don’t party much because I don’t really like parties (in the sense of actual parties, not large gatherings). But I see no problem in responsible social drinking, the idea of “gettin’ drunk” as something to do by itself does not appeal to me though. And the only way anyone has been “busted” for drinking or drugs in my experience is if they’re are hella stupid, which smart people…are not. You don’t tell too many people about a party with alcohol, you have it in a private place, and you DO NOT DRIVE and you probably won’t get caught.

What’s wrong with drinking and partying? As long as there’s balance for anything, it’s fine. No single preference for entertainment can accurately predict future success or failure.

my class president is the largest marijuana dealer in the school and is a football player. he also got a 2400 on his SATs and has a 3.9, throws parties every weekend, and is dating one of the hottest (and dumbest) girls in the school. he’s most likely going to stanford or columbia. and despite all the stuff he does outside of school, inside of school you wouldn’t suspect a thing.

being social and partying has absolutely no effect on those people who don’t LET it affect them.

Some of the kids at the top of my class drink and smoke, and some don’t. As long as you balance everything, you can get away with it and still get into top colleges. I don’t drink or party anymore. I just don’t find it that entertaining. In college, I think it can catch up to faster than in high school.

some guy from my school smoked a lot and got into Harvard.
some other guy smokes and drinks regularly, deferred from Yale, will prob go to Harvard or some Ivy
most intelligent people smoke/drink
i smoke but i do not drink

I don’t have a problem with drinking, but it annoys me when that’s the only thing people do/think about. Like they’ll just get ****faced every weekend and then talk about how they were sooooo wasted when they’re in class. Some people can’t afford to lose the brain cells, and honestly it’s not cool when you’re a dribbling, puking mess.

It’s fun and it’s fine if you do it, but just don’t go on and on about it. And drink responsibly PLEASE.

Half of the IB diploma candidates at my school are hardcore drinkers/tokers/druggies. Cocaine is the ‘drug of choice’ at my school. I’m sure at least some of them will be getting in the ives and be successful in life…

You guys need to stop being so uptight, I am talking about everyone who stated “get a life blah blah”.

I come from a super rich school where idiots binge on 6000 wines and expensive Scotches etc. People can have fun, a lot of fun, without drinking. Of course because of stupid laws that say we can’t drink till we are 21 people like the above posters probably get hammered and smashed to death when they do get their hands on alcohol.

I am quite popular, and I go to parties but drinking would just totally **** everything up. Drinking in excess… First of all I play varsity sports throughout the year and YES during cross country if I had drank the night before my time would be far higher than it should be.

Of course being all lawful is not smart either, the world has alcohol. I drink, in moderation, with my parents and on special occasions. To a high schooler one glass of wine or one shot of vodka does nothing. Of course HSers are idiots, for the most part, and cannot regulate the differences between moderate and binge.

People do not understand that you do not have to drink to have fun at parties.

Few people here, I guarantee you, drink for the pleasure of doing so. It is all to “please” someone… Same reason people do drugs and what not.

Now I am the first to support the lowering of drinking age (14 to drink w/ guardian, 15 w/o, 18 to buy) but drinking in excess is plain stupid…

but who cares? some people drink. some people don’t. the ‘popular kids’ are the ones i think OP is mad at, not just kids who drink. EVERYONE drinks at my school. like everyone… except maybe the stupid nerds, and those kids arent even the smartest kids… just the ones who think they’ve got it all figured out and are so infatuated with the fact that they work hard for their grades that they expect the same hard work and abstinence from everyone else. ‘popular kids’ are cliquey, exclusive, and immature… those r the ones OP doesnt like. they just happen to drink too =)

I’ve been drinking, smoking weed, and going through phases of other ****, including some pretty heavy phases, since I was twelve years old. My highschool GPA is 3.68 unweighted, lots of APs (straight A’s except for sophomore year, when I didn’t do much coming to class) and I got a 2360 on the SAT. I know a lot of people who drink a lot and smoke weed every day, though I don’t anymore (smoke everyday), and even do some coke and roll sometimes, and who still get really good grades. There are a LOT of really smart kids who like to git down.
