Dean of Students. Usually someone in that group is meant to help kids, separate from support from the counselling staff or clergy. There has to be some provision for kids who can’t get mail at home. OP needs an advocate.

You have older brothers, right?

If one of them lives in the same state, could you have your mail forwarded to his home? In fact, could you use his home as your “official” address while you’re a college student?

There will be other things that need to be mailed to you, at an address other than your on-campus address. You need to be sure that they can reach you safely.

Don’t ask your brother, though, if he lives out of state. You’re risking getting yourself reclassified as an out-of-state student, with much higher tuition. If your brothers live out of state or are not willing to help you in this way, go with the post office box in your home town (but try to find a local friend who can check the box for you every week or so to see if anything has arrived while you are away at school).

Also, LookingForward has a great idea about contacting the Dean of Students office. One of their functions is to work with students who have unusual issues.

Honestly, you need to clear out of that house and never go back. Immediately have your mail forwarded to another address, preferably one where you can conveniently pick it up even while at school. I believe that you can do this online through the USPS website. If you have to rent a PO box, do so, but If you have a relative who is trustworthy, that would be less expensive. In either case, do not tell your parents and brother who steals that you have done so.

Some schools assign students a permanent on campus mail address that they use for all four years, no matter where they live. If so, you could use that once it is assigned, with the relative as backup for things that are routinely sent to a home address.

By all means, contact the Dean of Students and explain your situation. See what they can do to help.

When you leave, make sure you take with you anything you might want in the future, because if going back to the house means that you will cave to demands for money, you shouldn’t return.
