A Trainwreck And A Turn-Around

Hey guys,

I'm in a bit of a bind and am really unsure of what to do. Here's my situation:

I previously attended Cal Poly SLO as an Engineering major and was dismissed after four quarters of terrible grades. During this time my father was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and has been struggling for his health. I also endured severe depression during this time - often not leaving my room for days at a time. I'd rather not give too much more information regarding these personal matters, but it was awful and I really wish I would have just left after my second or third quarter. I have very little documentation to prove my mental illness during the time. These issues have been resolved and I'm now a driven, focused individual.

I earned a Cum. GPA of 1.85 with four F's, a WU, a D, and a sprinkling of C's and B's. I earned a lone A in a social sciences class in the last quarter. Three of those F's were repeated and passed with the other C's. This counted for 36 quarter units (24 semester).

I started going to a local CCC and have been doing really well. I've completed 28 semester units (Fall and Summer) with a 3.85 GPA. I haven't officially transferred my coursework from SLO but I realize this is something I have to deal with. I searched for myself on the National Student Clearinghouse and my information shows up.

I've decided that I love Economics and have been focusing my coursework with ASSIT to push towards an (Biz) Econ major at a UC. The major issue is that many of my Econ pre-reqs (Calculus I, Calc II, Macro) were taken for low C's at my old school. Is there anything I can do to fix this? If I maintain my 3.85 I figure I'll have somewhere around a 2.75-3.0 GPA by the time I reach 60 semester units, depending on the exact figures used.

Am I going to be able to get into a UC with my terrible record at my old school? Can I even transfer into a UC when I'm not in good standing at SLO? What would you do?

you cant transfer if you’re not in good standing at your previous school. they ask you this on the application and it’ll be on your transcript when you send it in. i believe a couple weeks ago someone posted here that they got their admission rescinded because they sent in their transcripts and it showed that they were not in good standing with their old school.

Would completing a few courses with Cal Poly remove my CCC status?

you’re still CCC priority as long as you have the following:
Enrolled at one or more CCCs for at least 2 regular terms (excludes summer sessions)
Last college before transferring is a CCC (excludes summer sessions)
Completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) UC transferable units at a CCC

Stay at your CCC and contact your old CSU ASAP to see if you can qualify for academic renewal. You need to contact them to see what needs to be done to get yourself in good standing anyway, so I would press the issue and see if you can get academic renewal while you are at it.

Once you are in good standing with them, sign TAG agreements with all of the UCs you possibly can (all of them offer TAG except UCB abd UCLA). With your past history, those two schools would probably be a long shot anyway. I would try to go to UCSD or UCD.
