A UC Berkeley CC meetup actually sounds...interesting?

I’d be up for it, but I won’t be in Berkeley until this/next weekend. I’m sure others interested are still on vacation/in their hometowns…

interesting indeed

So how about Friday or Saturday at Sproul?

will sakky be there ?? can we beat him up ??

^^ My few cents – don’t hate on Sakky, he actually is one of the most knowledgeable posters I’ve ever seen. He may present his views in a way some Berkeley students find offensive, but to call him misinformed or less than extremely knowledgeable would be a mistake. Coming from someone who truly has loved Berkeley and wouldn’t mind coming here both for grad school and getting a job here some day.

I would like to meet Sakky in person, however, among a few other sincere CC posters. But I fear he graduated Berkeley a while back, and won’t exactly be around :D

Sakky haha. I have a few CC notables I wanna meet, but a lot of them headed off to other schools >.>

I won’t be at school till move-in day on the 23rd.

yeah we should do it after the 22nd/23rd because most of us should be in berkeley by then

There’ll be a lot of activities going on during welcome week and I’m sure people who just moved in need 1-2 days to settle. So how about we meet on Tuesday (25th) afternoon/evening? The day before class starts.

@mathboy - I don’t hate sakky. It was just a joke. And as much as i hate to say this, you probably are right. Sakky is one of the most knowledgeable posters on CC, if not THE most.

Having said all that, sakky however did douse my initial excitement at attending Berkeley. I obsessively read all the old threads in this berkeley forum and after reading his posts seriously regretted not picking an ivy. A point to note here is that I come from Asia and had no idea that the ivies were more prestigious in the US than Cal.

But then i got over it. And some of my initial excitement is back.

Ah I see, well I just said so because I think a decent number of Berkeley students do hate on him a little, and I think not rightfully.

Coming from a current student, you shouldn’t worry too much about what he said, just keep it all in mind as you make your way through Berkeley. As far as academic departments, Berkeley has several that are renowned in the world, and much more so than those of many of the Ivies (several engineering departments, CS, math to name a few), so you should be very excited. As it’s a public school, you’ll find a good spread of people there though, but there’s something for everyone, at least I think.

Yeah Ivies are a lot more prestigious here in the US, but if you ask people from your country whether they know Cornell or Berkeley better, they’d probably answer with the latter. To them, it’s either HYPSM or Berkeley lol

And your English is actually impressive CCNewb for someone who’s come from Asia. Were you born over there?

I say kyledavid80 is the most knowledgeable. ;-)

^^ Also knowledgeable but there really are several great posters whom I will not compare.

I may be up for this… we need details though

Sure! Do we have a facebook group?

@ CrystalProphecy - Yes, i was born in Asia and i still live there. This will be the first time i’ll set foot on the famed United States soil.

Frankly speaking, i care precious little about what people think of my school. I just need to know that Berk offers me enough resources and opportunities, and so far the impression is it does. And dare i say it, i think it offers much more than a lot of the ivies - i just have to go and get it.

Well said CCnewb :]

There is a reason certain schools have international recognition. Old-time elitism of the U.S. doesn’t get in the way of which schools are research powerhouses of the world. There’s something in Berkeley for everyone from a very average student to a future Fields Medalist or Nobel Prize winner.

For the average undergraduate, an Ivy might better, but to talented ones, the only downside of Berkeley at all could be if they belong to a major where classes are too large, and/or fill up fast. Otherwise, it’s pretty much a very fun place, and has boundless potential for one’s intellectual advancement. Very objectively speaking.

There is just noway I’m meeting any of you without drinking a bottle of wine first.

Okay someone needs to set up a time and place.

August 25th at like 4pm at sproul yes? And someone can make a facebook group if they want. Please reply if you’re going so it gives me confidence to show my face myself >_>

.__.
