Hi, i'm a highschool senior planning to apply to UM
The supplementary Q is

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (500 words maximum)

and i'd like to ask you guys what qualities UM has.. I know it is an amazing school, but i need some details that i can use in my essay...

I know that the school diversity is a big thing in UM right??

oh, my major is economics... so what qualities would the economics department have ??

This is a personal question. Why are you applying to UM? Yes, UM is an amazing school (imo anyway), but what attracted you to it? Do some research.

of course i went through the whole website after checking if the economics department is strong. I checked the curriculum and other stuff too. I also checked how people talk of UM in private blogs and other websites. But i’m having a feeling that what the school is wanting from this essay is not something like that… If i write an essay with what i liked about the program or the curriculum, it will be so boring and colorless… that’s why i was seeking for some help… please don’t think i decided the whole thing just by the rank :(

Well, are you applying to the Ross School of Business or LSA?

Anyways, here’s some points you should try to touch on:
-Your passion for the subject and how U of M’s curriculum tailors to you

-The location; Ann Arbor has been ranked by Forbes as one of the best cities in the country to work, so it gives you opportunities.

-The entrepreneurial spirit of Ann Arbor; countless businesses have been founded there, like Domino’s Pizza, Border’s Books, Urban Outfitters, as well as a myriad of locally-famous small businesses and regional chains.

-U of M Alumni who have gone on to be fiscal powerhouses like Bill Davidson (Detroit Pistions/Shock former owner), Tom Monaghan (CEO of Domino’s Pizza), and Larry Page (Co-Founder of Google). Talk about how Michigan is a place that proliferates innovative economic ideas and inspires generation after generation of businessmen.

…just to name a few. Just think outside the box, get creative. Use your own personal experiences and tie them back into your choice of Michigan. I’m sure if you sat down and really thought about it, you could crank out a decent essay in no time.

But the question is asking about the specific undergraduate school? So I presume we have to talk about the school, eg. Economics but no UMichigan as whole?

LSA is a school yes, but thats not the point . What I mean is, the OP thinks the question asks about UMichigan as a whole, then the question pertains to the specific school, am I correcT?

Immaturity? Really, I thought it was just a question. Maybe someone who goes to school there has a perspective a visitor on a campus tour would have missed? I think that is what op is looking for…is that offensive?

Really look at what interests you to make the essay unique and genuine. Have you looked into any oversea learning opportunities they offer for your specific major? Perhaps how about anyone that has influenced you who has connections to Michigan - considering they maintain one of the strongest alumni programs in the nation. Beyond the rankings is really where the heart of why people love U-M lies within; it’s just the feel of the campus and the aura of being there. I remember going to Eastern Michigan and working in Ann Arbor and the poise of a U-M student is very distinct (whether for better or worse… haha). All I can tell you is that there is something that attracts each individual which is why U-M is so diverse, but really you need to find what characteristics you can bring to the school. Afterall, even though they are asking what attracts you to them… they really want to know what unique qualities that you personally value.

when i applied last year, i(as a prospective mathematics major) just talked about qualities of the math department. I talked about the myriad of topics covered, the professors, the research being done, stuff like that. This question asks what makes UM special to YOU? Not someone else. If you want to come here for the economics department, then talk about that. Just don’t mention that it is a strong department because that just says you are applying for the ranking. They just want to know that you actually did some research on the university and are not just applying because it is the best school in michigan.

You can start by checking out “The Michigan Difference” videos on youtube. There is a good one featuring James Earl Jones filmed in 2005 for the Michigan Difference campaign… not sure if it is available on the net though.

Really? You’re just going to have other people write your essay for you? Seriously just go do the research yourself I’m surprised the other people on this thread are kind enough to reply you. Good for you though they do seem to have all the points covered
