Hello guys!
I’m a senior from Mongolia. And I’ve been asked by my teachers and school principal whether I’m going to take entrance exams of entering the universities of my country. Since I’m determined to study at US, I’m planning not to take them. However, I’ve noticed in one of the discussions that international applicants should be competitive enough to enter into their home universities. So in that regard, should I take these exams even though I’m willing to study at US? the exams are completely different from final examinations. Hope you guys help me on this.
You should definitely take them. No matter how determined you are, there is no definite chance that you will be admitted to a school in the US of your liking. You have to have safety schools in Mongolia.
Will you need financial aid, or do your parents have enough money to pay up to $60,000+ per year? If have good grades, and are a full-pay international student, many American colleges will welcome you with open arms.
But your odds of getting into a known university with considerable financial aid are not very good – the competition is very stiff! So you absolutely should have a back-up plan in Mongolia.
There would be no harm in taking them. That’s what I think. You can still apply for college in US though you’ve taken your entrance exam in Mongolia.
Can your family pay for you to study at US? Also, in order to consider as a high school graduate in your country, do you have to take the exam?
I agree with everyone above that you should be planning to take your entrance exams if only to have a back-up option. You can re-assess if you have been admitted to an American university, have a plan to pay for it, and have been granted your student visa before the exams happen in June(?).
I’m not sure how the secondary education system is set up in Mongolia, but in many countries the university entrance exams double as high school-leaving exams. For examples, American colleges would fully expect to receive A-level scores from British applicants. If an applicant from Britain decided not to sit for their A-level exams after they get admitted to an American university, their offer of admission might get rescinded. Ditto if they scores much worse than predicted.
