There was a thread somewhere about a student who was accepted but wanted to go elsewhere for a year and someone on one of the threads here told him to enroll at Cal and drop so that he wouldn't have to reapply and could come later as a continuing student. A friend of mine is in a similar boat. There is a specialized program at a college she doesn't care so much for. She wants to get her degree at Cal, where she was also accepted. However, she is really concerned about missing a major opportunity if she doesn't go for the specialized program, which should be transferable as Berkeley has the major but not some of the more professional classes. Should she accept both and do what that person in the other thread suggested?

This is what the Office of The Registrar website says:

“If you are a new undergraduate student and wish to return to Berkeley in a future semester, it may be beneficial for you to wait until the beginning of instruction and withdraw instead of cancel. If you cancel your registration, you will be required to submit a new admission application to attend a future semester; if you withdraw, you only need to apply for readmission, which is a much simpler procedure. Note that you need to be officially registered (enrolled in at least one class, registration fees paid, and no blocks) in order to withdraw.”

Here’s the link (it’s under “Notice to New Undergraduates”:

But if I were you, I would still double check with the registrar and the advising office to make sure.
