A Wonderful Visit to UA!

Like so many have done here, I wanted to post what a wonderful experience my Daughter and I had when we visited UA last week.

My D is a NMSF and is applying to about 9 schools. UA came to our attention because of the fabulous merit aid opportunities offered due to her NM status. We’re from the Chicago area, so we we very unaware of UA other than its awesome football team. :-)

We were very excited to visit and signed up for University Days. However, primarily due to the wonderful information provided here by Mom2CollegeKids, we were informed that U-Days was more for the general applicant and not focused on opportunities offered by the Honors programs at UA.

We were able to work with Jami Gates at the Honors College to create an itinerary that allowed us to tailor our day to get in some of the U-Day activities, but also get a LOT of face time with Honors College students and administration. Let me just say now that Jami was WONDERFUL! So nice, and so willing to work with us individually to make us feel welcome, and to make my D feel “wanted.” With so many people applying to such a large University, one does not typically expect such personalized and thoughtful interaction!

So, our day started off with a greeting at Nott Hall, the home of the Honors College. We were greeted by Jane Batson the Program Director of the Computer Based Honors Program. She sat and chatted with us about her program for about 25 minutes as we waited for our first meeting with one of the Honors College students. She was very informative about the CBHP and answered many of our questions. We then spent about an hour with a Junior Honors College student who gave us a tour of Nott Hall and walked with us over the the Ferguson Center to check in for U-Days. We sat in the HUGE Starbucks at “The Ferg” for about 30 minutes … she was a very informative. We joined the U-Days group for the Arts and Sciences College presentation, which included standard information about the programs offered by the A&S College. Incidentally, the U-Days turnout last week was the largest ever at UA with just under 1000 people attending! Then met Jami and another Honors student at Lakeside for lunch. This was the best time of the day according to my D. She had a WONDERFUL discussion with the Senior Student (Pre-Med major and CBHP & UFE member). He was from Tuscaloosa and had so much info to provide about the city and university and the benefits of the Honors Programming at UA. He then led us over to RidgeCrest for our tour of the Honors Dorms. All I can say is WOW! They are apartments … I supposed the ONLY thing that would classify them as NOT being apartments is that they do not have a “full” kitchen. But they do have a sink, microwave, and FULL size refrigerator. But 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths and 9 foot ceilings is ridiculous … obviously in a good way. The individual bedrooms are PLENTY large enough for one person and the common living room really is a nice size. Our Student guided us through campus giving us a very informative “mini tour” on our way back to Nott Hall (he had a class there so we tagged along). The walk from RidgeCrest to Nott Hall was very doable … we were walking at a good pace and made in in under 15 minutes. If you’re looking on the UA map, that looks like a pretty daunting walk across campus … it really didn’t feel that way. Our final meeting of the day was the best one (in my opinion) and it was with Dr. Morgan the Director of the University Fellows Experience (UFE) program at the Honors College. Our meeting was scheduled for 25 minutes and she met with us for just under an hour. She was very engaging and was genuinely happy to spend the personal time with us to share her enthusiasm for the university and the wonderful programming offered by the Honors College. She indicated that right now is just a very “special” time to be attending UA. President Witt is taking the university in amazing directions, and the students and staff are all very excited about the prospect for UA in the next few years.

I told Jami at the end of our day that I really could not have imagined a better day … really. So worth it, and I can tell you that UA is now firmly placed at a “tie for 1st,” using my D’s words, for which schools she’d like to attend. My opinion is if she gets in to UFE then she’s Bama Bound. As a parent, I can really say that that would be BAM-tastic!

Visit UA … you will NOT be disappointed.

Great to hear your visit went so well - let us know if you need any perspective from a fellow Chicagolander… my freshman DS could not love it more - a perfect fit!! Roll Tide!

Dad2…

Would you mind posting your trip report on CampusVibe (look in the far left column with the red NEW next to it. And, please mention that you’re from Illinois (I know that your screenname indicates that… )

Dad2ILD - D and I have visited twice and felt the same both times! Needless to day, UA is #1 on D’s list.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. UA’s marketing and personal touch are unparalleled. But what really separates UA from the pack is the fact that what you experience during a visit is not simply marketing: it’s the real deal.

My son, a NMF, is absolutely loving Bama at every level (academics, social life, super-suite dorms, recreation, extracurriculars, service learning, etc.) and that’s without CBH, Fellows, or Greek life, none of which he applied to.

M2CK … Done. Posted to CampusVibe.

Thanks!!!

:)

Dad2ILD(or anyone else who knows): what airline did you fly and what city did you fly into? We’re from Chicago area, D has applied to Bama and we’re trying to plan a visit. Southwest from Midway to Atlanta was what I was planning, unless there is a better option. Thanks in advance!

there is an airport in birmingham which is an hour away.

Southwest out of Birmingham has been great for us. Affordable, especially with wanna get away fares. Son has used the campus shuttle to get to the airport, but we’re having to find another route for Thanksgiving. Still beats driving and staying in a hotel to recuperate and taking time off of work.

mommylaw … we flew from Chicago (ORD) to Birmingham on United. We are big Southwest fans if that works better … and … you do not get charged the extra $25 for checked baggage. The drive from Birmingham Airport to Tuscaloosa is a VERY easy drive. Good luck!

mommylaw…try to fly to B’ham. Much, much closer! If you can’t get a B’ham flight, then you might as well look at Montgomery or Nashville…probably not further than Atlanta.

We fly Southwest Midway to Birmingham (MDW-BHM), several direct flights daily, fares can’t be beat and you can always cancel/rebook if they come down. Rental cars out of BHM are cheap and the drive is very easy (esp. compared to Chicagoland driving.) DSs trip home for Christmas is now down from $144 each way to $69 each!

BTW - great Alabama football viewing crowd at Another Round in Downer’s Grove. The Alumni Assn. is holding weekly games there as well as at the downtown location. Roll Tide!

I also recommend flying into Birmingham. I’ve flown Delta, American, and Continental into Birmingham. The Birmingham airport is much smaller than Atlanta, so your bags arrive quicker. Security lines are very shot, airport employees are friendly, and there’s free wifi. Southwest doesn’t yet fly to Atlanta, why which is part of the reason has a lot of Southwest flights. FYI, many flights into Birmingham that are not operated by Southwest are on regional jets, which usually means a quicker boarding and deboarding process.

Damn, I wonder why southwest is cheap everywhere but to Philly. Lowest fares are still $169+ one way from BHM - PHL.

“Son” can fly airtran from Atlanta to Atlantic City for $69. Problem is getting to ATL. Hopefully he can grab a ride from one of his friends that live in Ga.

My son and I just finished a great visit to Bama as well. (Your title says it all, Dad2ILD, so I hope you don’t mind me tagging on to your thread. )

What a special university! This was our second visit, and we loved it even more this time around! Friendly, helpful people. Absolutely amazing honors opportunities. Beautiful campus. Gorgeous new engineering complex. Talented musicians. There’s so much about this place that kept us grinning ear to ear throughout our stay.

(Loved “your” Riverwalk, mom2collegekids! Beautiful – especially with all the fall colors! Great recommendation!)

LOL…“my” Riverwalk? It is lovely - I wish I could claim it. I’ll see it this Thursday!

Roll Tide!

SimpleLife…I may have already asked you this…Can you post a trip report on CampusVibe (look on the left column for CampusVibe with the red “new” next to it.)

^Yes, “your” riverwalk – because you’re the only one who’s ever mentioned it here! And it’s worthy of mentioning!!

Thanks for all the great tips across all these threads, m2ck!

:)

You’re welcome!

Thanks to all who posted flight info. Birmingham seems to be the consensus as best/cheapest airport to fly in and out of.

Moving on to my next question: how cold is it in Tuscaloosa in Jan? Thinking of booking trip now for Capstone Scholars weekend- D didn’t get invite yet, but expecting/hoping for one based on her scores & semifinalist status.
