A Word of Advice

Okay, Well Before, I wasnt going to tell you where I went.actually im still not lol.

But I do have advice for you kids and parents that are dying to get your kid into these schools.

SEE BEYOND THE PRETTY LITTLE PICTURE!

Now tell me if this sounds familiar,
you go on a tour, they show you the whole school, every one is probably in their own little groups laughing or socializing. But! Are you actually hearing what they are saying, seeing the real picture of the boy in the corner by himself?

Now don't get me wrong. I have plenty of friends. But please know, that everything is not all peaches and cream.
Don't get to caught up into how great the academics are! Look at the real picture. Where will your student success be led to.

I am from California, I go to a school all the wayy in NY!
i thought i would love it on the plane nervous but so excited for the new life i am having. But when i got there...there was nothing to be excited about.

I go to a cheap ass school! No the tuition is not cheap, but our school barely puts anything into the school and it looks like crap. But when you visit it doesnt. When you visit your only seeing the inside picture, the shows the school takes you to the activities the everything except everythhing.

But what I am starting to realize is that I miss home. Home was whatever to me when I first left it, and now that I am still gone, I still miss it.

I can't speak for those kids who hate being home, but i love it, and I never want to leave.

Just be careful when your choosing these schools. Make double that this is the school that you are SURE that you can live with being at these schools for the next 4 years for 10 months at a time.
And if you can kinda see your self doing it...dont! Because you dont want to live in regret.

And dont think "oh if i don't like it, I will just apply somewhere else." Nope that wont work because you are given so much work you will forget.

And to my ABC(A better Chance) and financial Aid receiverss,

Be aware of the additional hidden costs. NOTHING IS FREE even if they do give you a scholarship, you will pay for something down the line.

I agree, that nothing in life is free. And I also hear your warning to look beyond the facade of schools to the real deal.

That said, and I don’t know what school you go to - school can be tiring, socially, academically, and emotionally. Adolescence is a hard time in life. And missing home is hard. Keep your chin up, and thanks for the reality check.

From your description, you’re talking Masters or Hackley. I`m guessing Masters. Whats the big secret? With all this cold weather and snow, I would not expect anyone from Calf. to be liking it so much right now.

I am glad you didn’t identify your school for the simple reason that your opinion may bias someone else against that school. It is all about fit. What is wrong for you might be perfect for someone else. We talk about fit ad nauseum here, but you make a great point to really listen to your gut.

If you’re unhappy more than you’re happy, you should not be there. No school is worth that. But if it is winter blues (everyone gets them), I would urge you to hang in there. Wait until you see spring in NY state. It is short lived, but glorious.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your story.

LoveisPeace: The culture shock of going from west to east is hard at any age. I am sorry to hear that you feel trapped with a bad decision. Yes, you’re right, schools do manage their image, there are hidden costs, and it can be a long hard year. That said, these are the hardest days of the year in most places, and especially if you’re in NY and stuck inside a lot. Few things is life are all good or all bad, and sometimes you have to hang in there and wait for things to improve. If they don’t, get creative about a solution. But do talk to your advisor. These people are usually trained to help you.

if you really couldn’t stand it anymore would you actually consider moving back home? you see this is actually partly the reason i’m applying to boarding schools this year. when we moved here from asia before my 9th grade year it seemed as though this public school would be perfect- it ranked in the top 50 high schools in america, as did the other high schools in the district, it looked awesome in the website, and in all the articles and such that even mention it, the people we talked to said it was a great school, but now that i’m here, i honestly just can’t stand it, for much of the same reasons you stated. i hope you’ll find something you like about your school, or just a better alternative. everyone deserves to enjoy life :)
