To all the students that have not got into their first choice (or 2nd or even third choice)... Don't beat yourself up!

There could have been others who were accepted with slightly higher GPA's and SAT scores or more extra-curriculars and better recommendations, etc. OR you may have had a lousy essay (probably not the case). It is difficult to know why someone with a lower GPA/SAT may get a spot over someone else, but it can happen. Some universities also want to factor diversity into their enrolment, such as ethnic background, international students, transfer students, etc. which are not necessarily accepted on the same criteria as regular students. A decision also varies from year to year depending on the number of applications received.

The advice here for others is to apply to many, both reaches and safeties, as you never know to where you may be accepted. Some acceptances may even come as a complete surprise.

Applying as a transfer student after your first or second year of studies may also be worthwhile - there may be a small number of transfer applicants accepted into your program of choice, which usually have increased odds over those faced by thousands of freshman students. Many students change their chosen field of studies and decide to opt out of a program, making room for new transfer students every year at all universities.

If you have a dream to attend a certain school, don't give up and keep trying. But don't be fixated on just one university - keep your options open and apply to as many as possible.

Does a hockey or football player say "I'm only going to play for one team?" The answer is "No!" If they are talented and fortunate enough to get drafted, they go to whatever team that picked them. After that, it's up to you to make the most of the situation, whether it was your 1st choice or last choice. Never think you are unsuccessful if you don't get into your first choice. The point is too keep trying and never give up on your dream. Getting into a certain university is like taking a step into an open door... it's up to you to figure out where it will lead you.

Just a Mom's piece of advice for three kids going through all of this right now. Trusting in God that they will all find the perfect fit!
