AAAAAI and AXA Community Scholarships

My daughter received a letter today from AAAAAI saying that she won a $1,000 award of excellence scholarship for her achievements while coping with Asthma. It said that there were 700 applicants nation-wide. We are thrilled as she is attending a private University and we are about $15,000 a year short! Did anyone else receive an award letter? It isn't posted online yet. Last year they posted a list of about 40 students for the $1,000 award and then a few more for the $100 award.

Also, I know that the National AXA winners have been announced, but has anyone received notice regarding the Community AXA award?

Have been waiting to see if anyone got a notice on the AAAAI. What part of the country are you in? I assume the awards are sent from chicago and will hit different parts of the us at different times.

Interesting they got over 3k apps last year and only 700 this year. Go to their web site and read the newsletters to confirm. Wonder what the difference was?

I guess the rest of us use wednesday as the drop dead date for notification....assuming you are in the next day postal zone

Again congrats. Pollen season here in the south and heading to my allergist on wednesday. Looks like i may have two things to look for on Wed. Hopefully both will come out well

I wonder if they're going to send out notifications for everyone who doesn't get a scholarship...closure is nice at least. I'm leaving on Wednesday to go to winter guard world championships (whoo!), so I hope it comes tomorrow, or I'll have to wait till I get home Sunday...poop.

We live in Louisiana. The letter was postmarked on March 31st from Wisconsin. The only difference I can see is that this is the first year that the application needed to be completed online. Funny...I would have thought that the number of applications would have increased with the number of kids on the Internet. I did read that they received 2800 applications in 2005, but her letter specifically stated they received almost 700 applications in 2006. Details should follow on their website on or before April 28th.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. It is strange that the number of apps dropped and I would wonder about the validity of electronic submission except for the mail in portion of the app where you had to send a form coded with your app number and doc's sig to their offices. That should be a fail safe.

My bad on Chicago, they are in Milwaukee. Will do trip to the mail box in about an hour to see if I got lucky.

Southernstar can you confirm this list has your d's name. Just curious if this is the correct list even thought its dated 2006

Yes! Her name is one of the 30 winners listed! Thanks for forwarding the link. Ummmm, does this mean that you are not on it?

one of my friends did win. Interesting we met at the school nurse's office in grade school when we went to get our inhalers. Now we are both seniors at the same HS.

good for him. I've won a few others that he did not and his asthma is worse than mine. So it all works out

I think there are fewer winners this year and there must be some type of regional component. Still confused about the fewer number of entries

anyway congrats to your daughter. I am a little worried about my asthma this fall re living the dorms.

Hopefully it will go well with all of us.

Well, congrats to your friend and congrats to you for winning a few others. Every little bit helps! Funny you should mention living in the dorm room...because of her asthma, that's one of my biggest concerns about her going to college! I'm considering sending her with an air purifier for the dust, but I think the jury is still out as to the effectiveness of these sometimes very costly items. Do you have a strategy yet?

for me I registered very early, the first day housing was available and my dad had talked to both the housing office and the health center about the "best" dorms for someone with allergies.

that was number 1.

I will take my air cleaner. It does keep the dust down its a honeywell. something. I have covers on my matress and pillows and will take those and I specified that I am very neat, not true and like to sleep, will make that true.

I will go by the helath center at the beginning of the year to make sure they know me. They do have my history and I will have my meds and will study ahead just in case I get sick same as I do now.

There is a lot of asthma out there so I'm certain that I will not be the only one with asthma on my dorm floor. I'm 18 I have had a lot of experience managing this so I should be ok. Same with your daugher. I found it actualy helped me. I had to plan ahead for possible attacks and stuff and it just carried over into my school work. there are a lot of kids with problems much worse than mine. I bet you d would say the same

Those are great tips! My daughter has learned to manage her asthma as well. She takes several inhalers, Singulair, and allergy medicines daily. It started as exercise-induced asthma 2 years ago and now she can't do without the meds. Great idea to call the university health nurse ahead of time as they may have tips as well. There's only one Freshman dorm at the University she is attending so no choices of dorms. I'm going to check out the Honeywell air purifier and check out additional tips on the web. Best wishes to you during your college years!

I won the AAAAI scholarship also! My friends were were shocked that there even existed a scholarship for asthmatics.

I also received the scholarship however mine was for $2000...and on the site they said that they only award $1000 and $100 scholarships?

I received tha AXA community award ---- $2,000, NY
