I just got a call from an admissions officer to schedule a phone interview. What does this mean?? Am I on the fence? Why would they schedule an interview so late??? I thought they were basically done with decisions by now.

D got an e-mail today asking her to go to Harvard for a second interview with an admissions office. I told her what it really means is that there is a great big pile of rejected apps at H (they did have 29000 apps) and that her app is not on that pile....yet. :)

Did you already have an interview / is this your 2nd one?

Thanks Jessephen. That made me smile. I feel better now.

@ laststopforme Well I did have one interview, but it wasn't scheduled through Harvard. I was fortunate to meet with a local alum who said he would write a great letter and sent it to the admissions office.

There's a really long thread about 2nd interviews if you guys are interested...

Good luck!

The different thing (from the previous second interview thread) about these phone calls and e-mails is that it is March 12, only 17 days from decision notifications and the second interviewer in both of these cases is with an admissions officer not an alum.
Journeygirl, if you don't mind, are you from anywhere near Harvard? You can see from my profile that we are from MA so going up to H is not such a big deal for my D (except that she has to miss school that day), but you were asked for a phone interview, so I figure you are probably not local.
Anyway, as I said - not on the reject pile...yet :)
We'll see - we are not reading that much into it, because rejection rate is so high, but hope for it to be a positive sign.
Someone on one of these boards called H something like "a great big hole that vomits out rejection letters" - I thought that was pretty funny!

A second interview!!!??? That doesn't seem fair to everyone. I want a second interview. I think I'm going to call admissions tomorrow and see if they will have an over the phone interview. Do you think that's being too aggressive/uncalled for?

I don't know if that might be too pushy/aggressive. S was not aggressive at all, just got app in early and hoped for the best. Alum interview was way back in early Dec. at her school.
Truthfully I am really surprised because D's SATs are a little low for H. Grades very good, though and an essay that I thought was great and prompted an e-mail from Wesleyan ad officer telling her it was a great essay.
So given her SATs were kind of low this second interview probably doesn't mean much.

I would not call admissions about this. Second interviews are given to only a small number of applicants for various reasons...for example, if your first interviewer provided an inadequate report, or if the report seems inconsistant with your application (Northstarmom listed many other possible reasons in the previous "Second interview" thread). We've also guessed that they're offered to applicants whom the adcoms are really on the fence about.

So, don't be upset that you didn't get a second interview...they have probably made most of their decisions already.

Yeah but I still think I should call. For all I know you could be an applicant and trying to sabotage me and have me NOT call so I never have a second chance.

What? Absolutely do not call the admissions office to ask for a second interview. If they want to talk to you again, then they will ask you.

I still think I should. I have this instinct that makes me want to call. I can call tomorrow afternoon. It's a Friday so it's not like they'll have classes. I'll just make it clear that I want an interview and that I deserve one like everyone else.

^Frankly, that sounds like an awesome way to get rejected... And though you may not believe me, I swear I'm a junior with no intention of applying to Harvard, so I'm not trying to edge out the competition here.

^You're a junior and are a neophyte to the college process. You'll realize how cut-throat it is and someday you will be calling up Harvard. I'm trying to give a voice to all the people who aren't equally represented by the Harvard "phone-interview" scandal.

That's ridiculous, they only do interviews for people that they aren't sure about. If you were not contacted, then the odds are they have made a decision for you. See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/652256-second-interview.html if you want some reasons why some were asked to interview again, but otherwise, chill out.

Do you think I got in?

Probably about a 7% chance like everybody else. Try to relax...I'm sure you will get in somewhere where you will be happy. Harvard is a longshot for everybody who applies. This horrible waiting period will be over in about 3 weeks and then you'll be on to deciding if you want them for a change, instead of the other way around. :)

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! its as if you feel Harvard is victimizing you or something. if they dont want you to have a 2nd interview, then youre not going to get one. Sorry! its not a conspiracy or anything, you just did a great job communicating who you were in your application and they dont need anymore info :)

OH MY GOD!!! So you think I got in patronus!!!! Thank you so much for ensuring my acceptance. I'll be really mad if you don't think I'm getting in and you're lying to me though. :(

StevenWheatland is either very sarcastic, or he will only crap on his hopes tomorrow if he actually calls them to demand a second interview.
