Aahh Help!!

AAhh, I just got my AP stats midterm back and somehow I got a D on it! So even though I had an A both quarters, I am getting a B+ for the semester! I did really bad freshman year (finished with a 2.25) and have been pulling my grades up ever since and the fact that I am going to get a B+ in AP stats means I can’t have above a 3.0 uw by the end of junior year even with the straight A’s I plan to get next semester! I have 3 A’s and 3 B+'s this semester, and a steady upward trend, but assuming I get straight A’s next semester (which I absolutely plan to do) I will have a 2.98 by the end of junior year!!! I have taken all AP/IB classes this year, and will do the same next year as I am going for my IB diploma, last year I had 3 AP, 2 pre-IB, 1 honors, and freshman year I had 4 pre-IB and 2 honors. My SAT score is a 1520 and my GPA weighted is about a 3.9. I REALLY want to go to Centre college, and I think I have legacy there (Great Grandfather went there, was a U.S. senator, and wrote a book about the university titled “The Legend of the Praying Colonels.”) Am I freaking out for nothing? Does a 2.98 look that much different from a 3.03? Will my SAT score and uber-strong upward trend make up for my GPA? Will I end up sleeping in a box? Helllp!

please pleeease?

Calm down. Please.
You're looking for reassurance, but no reply to your post can magically increase your chances at Centre. I don't know if your legacy will mean much, since it's not your parents or grandparents going to the school.
That said, your SATs + weighted GPA are great, so if you continue pulling your grades up, you should be fine. But realize that college is not as important as you seem to think it is, you won't end up sleeping in a box whether you get in or not, and you would do well to enjoy life and stop hyperventilating. :)
Good luck!

sorry about that, I just worked really hard and was upset by my poor performance on that Stats midterm. Anyways, now that I have ranted and raved and basically layed out what I believe my stats will be by EA time next school year (2.98 UW, 3.98 W, 14 AP/IB courses 6 pre-IB's, 3 honors, 1520 on the SAT, strong upward trend). Could anybody give me an evaluation on my chances at Indiana, Purdue, University of Kentucky, Colorado, UIUC, or Tulane?

PS. I'm a Florida resident planning to get the full IB diploma, and if it helps at all, this is my junior year course description AP & IB psychology (1 class, taking both tests), AP U.S. History, AP Statistics, AP & IB Music Theory (1 class, taking both tests), AP English III, AP Spanish III. My junior year GPA alone should be about a 3.71 UW, my GPA for soph year alone was about a 3.0 UW, and my GPA for freshman year was... gulp... 2.25 UW.

I actually think you've got a shot at most of your list, provided that you keep the upward trend in gear. It may be to your benefit to apply RD - that will give you another semester's worth of good grades to show.

I would encourage you to look into other small LAC's. If they are convinced that you have turned over a new leaf academically, they may be more willing to look at you as a complete person. Visit Centre, talk to someone in admissions about your concern, sit in on classes - show interest! You might also like to look at Kalamazoo College, Allegheny College, Gettybergh, and schools of that type.

A shot? Meaning they would be reaches/matches? I was hoping IU would be a safety because I saw that the only requirement for the Honors College there is above a 1350 on the SAT. If none of those would be safeties, can you reccomend some? I like the midwest, mid-atlantic, and the south, if that helps.

is a 2.98 UW, taking all the hardest courses available THAT bad?

............bump

interesting......... (BTW, looks like he was a congressman, not a senator - "unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in 1946")

HA! and you prolly thought noone reads your posts! :)

Which IU exactly?

My son is in a similar position with SAT's higher than grades, with the upward trend. On the theory that colleges might like to know that you have learned something in school despite your grades, he has concentrated on scoring well on the SAT II's. You can do very well with a bit of prep are learning something at school. I think that a good set of SAT II's would help you, especially at Tulane and Centre. The other school you might look at as a reach is Grinnell. In the last admissions cylce, a couple of kids with excellent SAT's and not so hot GPA's were accepted there.

NJRES, apparently you are correct, I never did too much research on paw paw (JYB, Sr.) and for some reason had always had the *incorrect assumption that he was a U.S. Senator. Oh well, being a congressman is impressive also, plus his son, my Uncle Johnny, who I'm close to has exceeded his father in accomplishments, he was the Gov. of Ky, was CEO of KFC, was CEO of Kenny Rogers Roasters, was Owner of Boston Celtics, he went to UK.

ohiomom- IU-Bloomington is what I was referring to, and my basic question to everyone is, with a 2.98 UW, 3.98 weighted, having the upward trend and the courseload that I mentioned in my 3rd post and a 1520 SAT I score, what state schools in the Midwest, South, Midatlantic, or northeast would be matches and what would be safeties. I'm not terribly interested in any liberal arts colleges other than Centre, and really am searching for information about my chances at schools like Purdue, IU-Bloomington, UIUC, UK, Penn State, Minnesota, Arkansas, Uconn etc. Thanks for your help!

u of minnesota-twin cities would probably be a match for you but if you're considering going there you probably want to get your app out SOON as their priority date was december 15th--app will be quick though, they don't require an essay at all. good luck!

You forgot to mention, "married for a time to Phyllis George" :) With your family connections (and stats) Centre should be an automatic shouldn't it? I know a grad who said it was a wonderful school.

should it NJres? iduno thats what I'm asking. I'm not anywhere in the realm of wealth that my uncle is, I mean I guess one would say that my family is comfortable, but not like Uncle Johnny, my mom and dad are lawyers, not CEO's, lol. Paw Paw (JYB, Sr.) passed away a long time ago, so would he really even be considered a connection to Centre?
shooting star - im a junior, i dont have to apply til next year. + that's very depressing information, as I had always assumed that UMinn-Twin Cities would be in the safety realm for me. I figured that since my junior year GPA in all AP and IB courses is about a 3.75, and my SAT I is a 1520, that would really drive home the fact that I have changed since freshman year. Plus, I assumed that UMinn was one of the easier schools to get into, princetonreview.com put it as a safety for me.
PS. I wonder if I could get into a UC seeing as they don't include freshman year in their calculations, and I would have like a 4.0ish according to their weighting system.

I think you are "freaking out for nothing". I think you should be careful to not overdo the connection in your Centre application - maybe his stories about the school inspired you type of thing. They aren't blind, they will figure out who your uncle is, your job is to be honest and modest. Why isn't UF your safety if you are interested in large schools? And have you given some thought to why you are considering a big state school and a small private school like Centre? It is OK, some people have very valid reasons for applying to schools that are so different, but keep in mind your experience at Centre vs Minn Twin Cities would have to be quite different - is that acceptable to you?

Yeah, it is. I am extremely adaptable, UF is a school I'm applying to, and will almost definitely get into, but I don't want to go there. I was born and raised in Gainesville and I need to get out of this town, no disrespect to it, it is a great town, I just need something new, anything. I would work best at a larger state school, but Centre is one exception because I know the area and about the school, and it is one of the few small schools that I believe would work for me. I have done plenty of introspection and I know what I want, I'm really just trying to figure out what my chances are at these schools, so I can set up my list of Reaches, Matches, and Safeties. I really am just interesed in knowing where I stand and how likely I am to get accepted into these schools.

so.... can anyone analyze my chances at those schools?

It's really hard to tell how things will play out when there is such a mismatch with SAT's and GPA. We did the College Confidential Stats Eval to see how far off-base we were with my son's college list. I think it might be worth it in your case.

do you think it would play to my advantage to apply to a UC since they don't include freshman year in GPA calculations, (my freshman year is what screwed me up, I had a 2.25 UW)? So at the UC's I would have like a 3.4ish unweighted + they would give me weight for my AP/IB and honors classes, so in reality on their scale it would be a 4.0ish, plus my SAT is good, so would that afford me a better chance based on the fact that they disregard freshman year? Also, my stepdad went to UC-Davis.

UCs deadline has passed, so don't worry about those anymore. However, I think you will easily get into Purdue, as I got in with lower SAT & Weighted GPA than you did. Tulane might be a slight reach, but your SAT is really high so then again maybe not. I think you have a decent chance at University of Illinois Urbana Champagne as well.
