Personally I prefer Medill, just because I really like Northwestern as a university in general, and also because I want to go to a longer summer program so that I can really get a feel for what journalism is like. Already sent my application in for that, but now I’m debating whether to apply to AAJA for backup. Not that AAJA would really be backup, though, considering their admittance rate is way lower. Do you still think it’s worth it to apply? I especially think that the first essay prompt requires a lot of thought, and I don’t know if I can get all components of the application together in 6 days…

You might as well, just to possibly have another option. It took me like 3 hours to write both essays (I mean, max is 250 words, so it’s not very long at all).

I love NU too, but didn’t apply to the Cherubs program because I don’t have enough time to spend that long there over the summer and it’s pretty darn expensive. AAJA is a much better deal.

For the work samples, are Google Doc links acceptable? What are you guys doing?

Is it possible to get in J Camp with little or no journalistic experience? Because I’d really love to go and journalism is a main career option for me but I haven’t got much experience or sample articles :/

@ally17 I would avoid Google Docs links, just because they can get messy with the sharing. I’m not sure what the exact format AAJA wants samples to be in is, since I haven’t filled out the application yet, but I assume they would want you to attach them. Just transfer the samples into a Word Document, or export the Google Doc as a PDF.

@rhea23 I’m in a similar situation. I haven’t had much experience either, and I only realized my interest in journalism this year. I’m sure it’s possible to get in with limited experience. Just make sure to show your enthusiasm and interest in your application. How many work samples do you have?

Heh, I used Google Doc links. @pmmywest, you’re right, except that they require samples to be submitted through links (no upload option for Word of PDF). Not really sure why they do that, because it seems like Google Docs is the only option. @ally17, you’re fine, I don’t know what else they expected us to do.

@rhea23…It’s competitive, but I think you’ve definitely got a shot! Samples are optional to upload, so I guess that shows that that’s not something they strongly, strongly consider, though I’d say submitting samples can definitely boost your application. If you have any at all, submit them; I can’t remember 100%, but I think the instructions said they could be something you’ve written for an English class too. Not sure at all though.

Thanks guys!

I just submitted my application and I’m so nervous haha :).
I didn’t put in any work samples and I’m pretty sure that will affect the decision, but there’s nothing I can do now so I’m just hoping for the best.
Not sure how much these will help, but I had a video, and my teacher recommendation and essays turned out well so I guess I’ve probably got a shot
How did everyone else’s go?

Hey guys! For the essay portion of the application, at the top it says that the max word count is 250, but then in the box it says that the maximum word count is 500? What did you do @rhea23?

Good luck everyone!

@ally17 I kept the first one at exactly 250, but my second essay was around 275 because I actually couldn’t cut it down anymore. I’m hoping it won’t be too bad because I’ve got a few Latin words in there and those usually don’t count in a word count thing, and it was only a few words over anyways.
If anyone else submitted a video, do you mind adding a link? It’d be great to see what everyone else did :)

My word count was the same but flipped–first essay was longer by 10 words.

Both my essays were exactly 250 words. Have no idea how that happened.

I didn’t submit a video.

Just submitted my application! I definitely spent more time trimming down my responses than actually writing them out. No video from me either.

finally done!

Does anyone know when results come out?

A previous thread said it was in May?

Hey guys!! I just found this thread today… I applied as well I read on last year’s that they emailed out some acceptances on March 28 and that the rejections came later, with a deadline for all notifications around April 9. So nervous…

Hey guys!!! I just found out I got in. Congratulations to all receiving their acceptance letters please add me on Facebook and hopefully we can do a Facebook group to freak out with eachother

Errr how spaced out are these acceptances going to be? Because I’ve gotten nothing so far…
