My D is a junior in HS and currently Cornell is her first choice. She would be an art major. Her stats are in the range for Cornell, she goes to a very competitive HS. Looking at Naviance kids with her stats have gotten in (of course plenty have been rejected!).

Cornell doesn't participate in National Portfolio Days, so there isn't an easy way to get preliminary feedback from them on her portfolio. D and I were talking and thought that maybe it would be worth it see if we could meet with someone from the art department over the summer to give a preliminary look at her portfolio. Does Cornell do this? Do you think it's a good idea?

As an art major do you think it's a good idea to apply ED if she does settle on Cornell as her first choice?

I’m not sure how much credence one should give stats, or Naviance, for a prospective art major. Naviance lumps the entire university together (or at least ours does). And the university reports stats for the architecture school separately, but does not break out its art majors separately.

If it helps, I’ve read elsewhere that someone with this interest might also consider the following schools:

Rhode Island School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts, Washington University, Carnegie Mellon university, Yale, Brown, Wesleyan, Bard, Vassar, Cooper Union.

monydad - I know that naviance lumps everyone together, but it’s the best tool available to see if she is even in the running stats wise!

The art schools are out. D does not want a stand alone art school. She wants a BFA from a university. We have visited CMU and she really likes it. We will visit Wash U over spring break.
We are considering SMFA/Northeastern instead of Tufts. I have read that Tufts and SMFA are far enough away in distance to create a commute, D is not interested in that. SMFA is next to Northeastern so there wouldn’t be a commuting concern. The rest of the schools on your list are either art schools or don’t offer the BFA.

My concern isn’t so much the stats, but that there doesn’t seem to be a way to get any initial feedback from them on the portfolio. NPD was great as she got feedback from a bunch of schools on what they want to see next year when she submits her portfolio. We were thinking that maybe we could do a preliminary portfolio review informally with a trip to Cornell over the summer. Was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this.
