Abandoning my AP Psych dreams for Chem?

So, I'm taking AP Chemistry this year.

My school does not offer AP Psych but I've always been really interested in Psychology. So, I got a study guide, looked for some places where I could rent a textbook, and decided I was going to self-study for the test. I've been really excited.

However, I found out recently that the AP Chem test is on May 7 at 8 am and the AP Psych test is at 12 pm the same day. I'm really unhappy, as I don't think I'll even get out of the AP Chem test until past 11 and then I don't think I'll have time to get to a testing place that is mostly likely out of town. But deep down, I still want to try...any suggestions? Should I try to sprint out of the testing room on May 7 or would I be mentally setting myself up for exhaustion/failure? Should I wait until next year when I know I'll be a lot less motivated to self-study? No way I can abandon AP Chem. Anyone else been in this situation?

You should probably talk to your counselor or whoever is your AP Coordinator. They can probably help you work something out so you can take both.

You simply sign up for late testing, it’s not a big deal as long as your school’s staff is reliable

Explain to your guidance counselor and/or AP coordinator that you can’t make the chem exam and ask about late testing. Go to the Psych testing.

You can sign up for a late test if your Psychology test will be in a different place.

I don’t see why you can’t take both at the same place. I had ap enviro and ap psych (not offered at our school) at the same day and was still allowed to take both. If worse comes to worse, they should let you schedule the late testing date as everyone else has mentioned before.

Hey I am in the same situation as you are. I’m contemplating self-studying Psychology while taking the AP Chem course right now. However, since Chem is really difficult, that is my main concern if they are on the same day. After taking the AP Chem test, I will be very mentally drained. So I think I should ask if I could get late testing also because I might have tennis finals that day too.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but can you sign up for late testing without an excuse? I’m asking because my tennis schedule for high school could potentially interfere with the testing date (May 7th) because it’s still tentative.

^You have to be legit “sick”, have at test same day and time, or like a religious reason. [AP Exam Coordination - AP Late Testing](Late-Testing Policies – AP Central | College Board)
If you really want to do psych, your best bet is to be “sick” for the chem exam and have a sudden recovery minutes before the psych exam. I have environmental and psych the same day, but it’s at the same school so I don’t really have this issue.

I had this exact situation. The 7 hours of testing in retrospect was not so bad. Adrenaline pumps you up incredibly. Didn’t take an AP psych/chemistry class but did honors

My nazi Chem proctor ended at 12:20 after being incredibly thorough. Of course then my dad drove like a madman to the other testing location and lo’ and behold the Psych proctor waited for me along with the rest of the people there and knew who I was as I sprinted in.

Psych is a piece of cake and you feel relieved and so relaxed after the strain of chemistry. Do it!

I ordered the Princeton Review AP Psych book a month ago and since then it’s been sitting in my room staring at me to hurry and make my decision.

My guidance department is honestly pretty incompetent. I can guarantee that I am the only student in the history of my school who has ever even thought about self-studying for an AP, and I don’t really know much about it myself, so I just assumed I’d have to go to another testing center. However, it would be great if I had the test there, so what do you think I’d have to explain/persuade to my counselor to see if this is possible? And even if it is, I know Psych is considered easier, but can anyone rate the mental drain on a scale of 1 to 10?

The most applicable reason I saw for late testing was “Two or more AP Exams on same date and time,” which, technically it is not on the same date, but if I had to drive 40 minutes away to a different testing center, than I suppose that still works? Am I right? I don’t really like the idea of some “miraculous” recovery from something that is supposedly a serious injury/illness, and besides, I’d have the chem exam still as a burden while all my peers would have gotten it over with.

To Darthpwner, I did see something on the list for late testing that could apply to you, (“athletic contest/event”) however you have to pay a $40 fee for this and I’d honestly say it’s not worth it. Unless it’s Regionals or State, or your coach is seriously considering suicide if you don’t go, I’d say you can miss one match, even if you’re the star player.

Take the AP Chem and the AP Psych at the same test center?

If its really that far away, and you want to take both, you can definitely make the time and effort to wake up early and take both exams in the farther away center.

Okay thank you lemons8, I’ll try to see how things work out over Winter break before I make my decision.
