ABC Reception?

Did anyone else get an email about the ABC Reception? Here’s what it said:

"We are honored to invite you and two members of your family (or two guests of your choosing) to the first-ever ABC Reception at the UC Santa Cruz campus! The purpose of the reception is to celebrate your admission to UCSC, to acquaint you with some of the community and resources available to African/Black/Caribbean students on campus, and to give you a taste of student life.

The morning reception includes:

Welcome by Executive Vice Chancellor, Alison Galloway
Faculty and student research team presentation
UCSC community introductions
UCSC alumni presentation"

I thought this was an honors program invitation, but it doesn’t look like that. I’m not African American, so this confused me because the program looks like its for African Americans…

Yes I got that too! I was so worried that I’d market my application wrong I s2g I had like five heart attacks. I have no idea why they sent it to me, though… maybe it was a mistake or something?

I also had a mini panic attack when I received the email! Haha, I don’t know why I received the email, but please do let me know if and when you find out!

got it here too and am not African American either - must be an error.

this is crazy guys! I emailed the director of the reception for some clarification. the school is going to have a lot of explaining to do about this if it actually is a mix up!

Non “ABC” son got one also. I first accused him of checking the wrong box on the app. Tried to convince him to accept for the free night at the Scotts Valley Hilton but he wouldn’t go for it? :wink: Getting that email and watching the acceptance video has him a little worried about UCSC.

@FarWestCoast LOL I had the same reaction…thought my son checked the wrong boxes and was worrying how to explain that to the schools he’s been accepted to :wink: Exhaled when I saw @HopefulCASenior post in a different thread.

Yup, I got that same email yesterday! However my ethnicity doesn’t apply so maybe it’s a mistake? Or they just send it to everyone by default?

I don’t think they’d offer to pay a night at the Hilton for all admits :wink: I choose to believe that they were supposed to send Regents notifications and mixed up the lists :smiley:

No response yet from the director. If anyone else feels like emailing them, then do so because then maybe one of us will get a response.

If you received this invitation, what are your stats? I want to test my hunch that the Reception invitations were sent to people who were supposed to receive a scholars program invitation.

4.3 UC/4.0 UW 2030 SAT, ELC, lots of leadership. Pretty borderline stats. A friend of my son’s was invited already, same gpa with more rigor, over 2100 SATs

I just got a response from the director:
“Thanks, ----, for your response to the invitation. The reception is intended to provide campus resource information to African/Black/Caribbean admitted students. If you feel this information would be helpful to you, you are welcome to attend. If not, you may disregard the invitation.”
Slightly disappointed honestly, especially since it seems like honors program invites have been sent out already…

^ same here- kind of weak response. Got honors/Chancellors invite email yesterday around same time as the ABC email

hm, guess i won’t be receiving the honors invite if they have already been sent out then.

@HopefulCASenior Yeah, kind of a letdown. Makes choosing which school to attend a little easier. And you have some good schools to choose from. Good luck wherever you wind up!

@FarWestCoast I thought the same thing! I was sure we checked the wrong box somewhere…lol. Thanks for posting one and all. I can sleep better tonight.
