so i recently got accepted to UCSD for environmental engineering, but i just learned that its a fairly new program so it is not ABET accredited yet. Is this a bad thing? Will I be unable to find a job after I graduate? Will I be able to get accepted into a good masters program without the abet accreditation on my degree? should i not go to UCSD? help!!!

are you (or anyone you know) majoring (or have majored) in environmental engineering from ucsd finding jobs easily? or internships.

I’ve discussed this with my friend who was also accepted into environmental engineering at UCSD. I think it would only matter for Graduate school. It’s engineering at UCSD. UCSD is a solid school with a good repuation for engineering. It’s not like it’s some weird school no one has heard of. The only UCs that are ABET accredited for Environmental Engineering are UCI and UCR. UCSD is by far better than them in engineering.

If you want to get a job with a big firm or for the government, that is where ABET accreditation will come in handy. Graduate schools is more important than undergraduate. Just make sure Graduate schools you apply to are ABET accredited. From what I’ve seen, there are no graduate schools in California that are ABET accredited for environmental engineering.

bump… can anyone else answer this?

Graduate schools do not look for an ABET degree or take that into account for admissions. They really could give about ABET.

ABET plays a role when applying to jobs in the Military or other government positions. They have much stricter requirements.

For positions in the private sector, they have different requirements.

Also ABET plays a role when taking the PE exam. In the state of CA you don’t need to have an ABET degree to take the FE/EIT or PE exam. There are different year requirements, 48 months for non-ABET degrees/ 24 months for ABET degrees, when taking the PE exam. The FE/EIT you can take your senior year as long as you are in an engineering major.
