Hello,

I am looking to go into a Computer Science Major. I have heard that it is very important to attend a school that is ABET accredited. I am currently looking at some schools that are and some that are not. I do like some of the schools that are not accredited, but would like to know how big of a difference it would make if I graduate with a Computer Science Bachelor degree without accreditation.

Thanks.

I would not go to a school without ABET accreditation if I was majoring in Eng or Comp Sci.

Which schools are you now considering? I thought your list had accredited schools.

I’ll PM it to you.

CS is a young field and many good schools are not ABET acredited. You need to go to a ABET school to qualify to take the test to be called a Professional Engineer, which is important if you do something like Civil Engineering and meaningless for CS because there isn’t a PE certificate for CS.

^^ Thank you mikemac!

I’ve read opinions from CS engineers similar to that of Mikemac. Being a job-hunting alumnus of a CS program that lacs ABET accreditation apparently has no impact at all on some recent graduates.

The only advantage I think you would find as a CS major is that most companies that hire CS majors also hire engineers and generally the look for ABET accredidation for engineers so… going to an ABET accredited institution kills 2 birds with one stone for them. Hence, going to such an institution my open up a few more job prospects for you.
