about choosing majors

Hi everyone,
I want to apply for the economics major. However, because my high school is a very new school, it doesn't offer a lot of IB courses. So I chose all three sciences, maths, history, LA and spanish, which have almost nothing to do with economics. So when I apply, would the admission officers think I have been wasted my time on subjects just to make my transcript look good?
Thank you!

Absolutely not! AO’s are not going to penalize you for failing to take classes that don’t exist on your campus. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to demonstrate your interest in economics. Check out what is available at your local community college, start a econ. club, find a related summer internship, do an independent study, etc. Many students can’t take a class in their subject of interest, be creative!!

I’ve heard more than one admissions officer say that they don’t really pay attention to intended majors when looking at an application (unless someone is applying to a specific school like engineering, business, nursing etc.). The reason is that they say that half of the applicants apply undecided and of those who apply with majors, half of them end up switching majors during their college years.

And I agree with the above post that colleges don’t expect you to take classes that aren’t offered in your particular HS. When your HS transcript gets sent the school also sends along a school profile which would give colleges this information.

No. Many high schools do not offer any econ classes, and colleges figure the odds are high that you will change majors anyway. It doesn’t really matter.
