About Common App Supplementary Forms

Hi.

I'm wondering if you guys think it would be acceptable if I use purely the school's Application except for the teacher evaluations, midyear reports, and school reports (which are from the Common App) . All three forms will still be there, except it will be the only thing from the Common App. More specifically, the school I'm talking about is Hopkins... I checked and their forms are like... IDENTICAL (their own and the common app's that is).

Cuz... I gave my teachers the common app forms a LONG time ago, (3+ months before) and I really haven't looked at the two methods of applying (C.A. vs the school's form)... until now, when i realize that the school's own form is SO MUCH EASIER. So... I think it's too much of a hassle to tell them to recopy all of what they wrote for me onto a new form.. and I think one of my teachers may have sent it out already..

What should I do?

bump . . . I was wondering if I could do that as well since I am applying to 9 schools. Only, the school I'm thinking of accepts common app in addition to their own, but would teach rec look bad on common app if the rest was their app?

why not just do them online , cause its much easier

My son used the Common Application for most of the schools he's applied to. Only one mentioned using any form at all for teacher's recommendations. (This particular school only has prospective students only use the Common Application - that IS their application)! Since his teachers had already taken the time to write wonderful letters of recommendation for him, we thought it might be rude to ask them to now also fill out the form... so I'd called that particular school to find out if they needed the form in addition to the letters and they said "no, the letters alone would be fine." With that said, I suggest you call the school/schools and ask them directly. I think the bottom line is that they get information from your teachers... I doubt most schools are that anal about the exact format that information is in. That school also requested the School Report form (Common App.) to be submitted, but our school already supplies their own report that goes out with every application (my son's school sends out all applications)... so it would be redundant to have the school fill out a form in addtion to their own report.

When in doubt, go to the source and ASK! :-)

Excellent advice! Although I can appreciate that students (and parents) sometimes feel more comfortable asking questions in a chat room, please do consider "going to the source!" We are available nearly 24/7 to answer questions about the Common Application, Common App Online, and member institutions.

Ah! CommonAppInfo- nice of you to drop in!

Many students have asked how they can send in more complete explanations of their extracurriculars if they use the common app online. Some of us have suggested that they use the page that is available for additional information for that purpose. Have we been giving them good advice that your member institutions would agree with?

Yes - that's correct. We recommend that they use the Additional Info/Explanation section on page 3. If they prefer to send something longer/more detailed, they can certainly snail-mail it.

Thanks! I feel better now. :)

when schools say the postmark deadline is November 1, does that mean in the mail (no later than) Nov 1, such that a Nov 1 postmark is timely?

Yes -- if a college says "postmark deadline," that means it must be in the mail and postmarked on or before that date.

Some teacher rec forms will indicate that the teacher can just submit a letter if it addresses most of the questions and topics on the form.

That's true, and it varies from college to college. However, when the student is using the Common App, we encourage the teacher to complete the Teacher Evaluation form and attach a letter as a substitute for the evaluation section on page 2.
