About IB Math HL

I am turning a sophomore next year, but i am moving schools and the school has an IB program instead of AP. So I want to prepare for the courses that i will take in junior year.
So one of my classes that i was hoping to take was Math HL, but i saw some of the threads concerning it and they really spooked me out.
So i want to prepare for it a year early, but i have no clue of the curriculum.
Is Math HL same level as Calculus BC?
How far does the first year go? (As in compared to Algerbra II, Pre-Cal, etc)
PLEASE HELP~
I am very very nervous about this.
What should i even study?
should i study Calculus before taking the class? (By the way, I barely finished algebra II this year bymyself, but i have a 800 in SAT I math)
HELP (ESPECIALLY FORMER/PRESENT IB HL MATH STUDENTS!)

It consists of calculus + statistics + some other stuff.

Are you planning on taking precalculus next year then?

From what I’ve heard yes, except that the IB stuff doesn’t cover the same amount of integral calculus.

^

no, i can’t take Pre-Cal because i will be in that school (MYP program)
but i can study bymyself if necessary

So what sophomore math class will you take then? At my school the MYP program consists of the same classes as those taught in other non-IB schools, but IB is incorporated into them. My progression was this:
Algebra II (fr), Precalculus (so), AP Calculus BC/IB Math HL (jr, because there weren’t enough students for a separate class).

I’m taking IB Math HL next year and the standard class to take before it (10th grade) at my school is Advanced Pre-Calculus. the AdvPreCalc curriculum consists of:
linear and quadratic equations (this was review),
polynomials (also review)
rational functions
inequalities
functions (emphasis on inverses)
conic sections
intro to trigonometry
triangle trigonometry
graphing trigonometric functions
solving trigonometric equations
exponents and logarithms
sequences and series

I’ve heard HL math and physics are the hardest IB classes, but people take them and get good scores.

Hope that helps!

I’m taking IB HL now and I’m probably going to drop down to SL next year. I think HL is for those who really love maths (or planning to major in subjects such as engineering).
Because I study in Australia I’m quite unfamiliar with the high school courses in the states, but so far the topics we have covered this year are: linear equations, matrices, quadratics, trigonometry, sequences, polynomials and differential calculus. SL also covers these topics but at a much slower pace and less depth.
Hope that helps!

I’m a IB Math HL student. Don’t be too scared to take it. imo, IB math is stupid. lol. I like AP calc better because it has more to do with plain calculus. it’s not impossible at all. Of course, im a future math major so it could be a biased opinion. lol

^ That’s my opinion too haha, also coming from a prospective math major :)

I also think HL sciences are stupid. Taking SL Chemistry (or another SL science course) + AP Physics is more beneficial than two years of HL Physics.

you cannot take the exam next year, fyi.

in my school, you take math HL after multivariable calculus and differential equations, which is itself preceded by BC calculus. We have a very high pass rate and have students score very well. however, Math SL and Math Studies SL require negligible amounts of calculus, even though we wait to take them until after AB or BC calc (foolish IMO, but we have to wait until we’re in 11th grade to take it)

math HL is very difficult.

oh GOD.
Well, i am not sure what math classes they provide over there at ISU, but i think i’ll take Pre-Cal.
Everyone makes me sound like an idiot (all those who posted on here)
unfortunately, I am going to a Med-School (After college. In Pre-Med, I’ll probably major in biology) so I think i should take HL, right?
Uh, I am so dead!
Then I should just study early so that i can get a sense of what’s to come
I feel hopeless.
IMO, i think they should only have IB Math SL, and not HL

Oh, I also have another question (but you can always answer my previous question):
How to report cards come out at an IB school?
So every quarter, do they give you a number from 1~7?
or do they give you a letter grade (A,B,C…)?
also, are the scores kept for two years until the program ends, or in senior, you have a fresh start?
Thanks for the help.

i go to an american school, so our grades are just ABCD etc. We don’t get our senior year scores until after we’ve registered to go to college, but it’s different with European universities, which often give you provisional acceptance and will wait until they see your scores to make it official.

Your regular grades are just like any other school (ABCDF after every quarter, etc.).

In each class you will complete an internal assessment. Then in May of junior and senior year (most are taken in senior year) you will take your external assessment (basically the AP exam of IB). The two scores are combined to give you your final score out of 7, which you receive in July of the year you graduate.

I believe you get junior year scores after junior year? is that true?

IBfootballer, that is true. this year, the report comes out 7/6/09.
