hi, i just joined college confidentials and i was wondering..
how important are leadership positions?
there's no doubt that i'm involved in a lot of ec's but
i'm just an active member, not the leader.
would this lack of leadership positions jeopardize my chances of getting into a prestigious school
(given that i have the necessary standardized scores and a good admissions essay)?
please give your thoughts and sorry if this is an existing post topic!

Welcome to CC.

I think it depends on your school. I know some UCs have a point system that ONLY give points for significant positions. Just being a member gets you zip. Some UC's however, recognize that you went to meetings and such, and will give you some credit for this.

You can still talk up just being a member and the activities that you have done and how they shaped you.

I know that most ivys want leadership positions. I'm not saying that you'll have no chance in getting into prestigious schools, but it will probably lower your chances a bit.

I guess i'm an anomaly because i had zero leadership positions and got into an ivy league.

granted, my gpa and sat's were all really good. but you have noo clue how much i was freaking out over this last year because it seemed like everyone was president this and treasurer that. CC is bad for things like this, lol. But i think i showed them how involved i was in my activity by writing about it. I also got a rec from the advisor that talked of all the contributions i made to the activity. If you love doing something, i believe your app will show it.

so basically, you need to excel in an area of interest
not like become the president of like 10 different clubs, right?
if that's so, then i'm relieved now. thanks so much guys.

Yeah it's not about quantity, but rather a focus of activities that reflect your character and what you want to pursue.
Things like NHS, Beta Club, Student Government, etc... are (IMO and based off my the clubs at my school) fluff ECs.
If you're passionate about something that's not offered at your school, start a club! That's what I did. I have a feeling that my ECs and leadership position significantly helped me get into my school of choice.

thanks ep1th3t! your comment helped me so much.
not too long ago i was worrying about my ECs, but now
i'm kind of relieved! thanks again.
