About move to other state apply FA

Hello,i live in LA now just for three month, but now I plan to move to NY,but I worried about that if I move to NY I didn’t get FA cos I’m the other state people, I need to pay money for school by myself,it is that’s right?how can i still apply FA in other state?Thank u

How old are you?

Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent resident?

Where do your parents reside?

When do you plan to start college?

I’m 19 years old,i’m permanent residents, I have green card and SSN,I might live by myself with my relative,I plan to go to school in 2018

Where do,your parents live? Your state of,residence as an undergrad is where your parents live.

In MOST states, you must be a resident for 12 months to establish residency…your PARENTS must be residents for that time.

If you move now…you most likely will not have instate status in either NY or CA when college starts in the fall.

If you live with relatives OTHER than your parents, this will not probably get you residency in that state…if your parents don’t live there also.

And please…don’t send me any more PMs.

My mom is live in Los Angeles ,and she live here for three years, I just came here for three months, I don’t know so I just ask in here, but if I move now, I stay in NY for a year it is Ok?I hear that if I can Economic independence so I can apply by myself?
Oh thumper1 sorry ,I just fist time use it I don’t know how can you know I reply my message in here,Thank u

If your parents will be living in CA, that will be YOUR state of residence as well.

@sybbie719 can a student like this get instate tuition status if his parents remain in CA?

Is that mean my state of residence is decided to my parents?if I without my parents state, I live in my relatives I cant get FA instate?

You are not eligible for NY State aid if your parents do not physically reside in NYS (they check the NYS tax rolls).

NYS does not make you fully independent for NYS aid until you are 35 years old.
Again, you will not be eligible for NYS aid if your parents do not live in the state.

Thank u very much
