i am planning to apply to MIT, Caltech and Stanford.
as you guys know those schools are really competitive and none knows about my chance.
so i wanna know about some safe schools (3 or 4) that have good physics, computer science, math and/or EE, but still have low SAT score and all that..

would you guys pliz describe schools' strength and weakness...

Where are you located? There are many possible safe schools out there. Are you looking for a large school or a small school? Urban campus or rural? There are too many choices out there - narrow your search by thinking about what you want in a school.

i live it CA. i do not care abour the campus that much... (i am a kind of person who admitts the fact that big campus has cons and pros while the small one has other cons and pros..)

But since you are in state, getting into Berkely won't be as hard. I say apply to the other UC schools (SD, SB, Irvine, etc.). It is my belief that your "back up" schools should be in your own state.

If you think UCB average SAT is high then Cal Tech, MIT, & Stanford would be extreme reaches.

Other good engineering in CA would be UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCD, Cal Poly SLO.

Well, figuring out what schools' strengths and weaknesses are is kind of a subjective thing. We can suggest schools, but ranking strengths and weaknesses is something you are going to have to do on your own, as part of your college research. If you've got specific questions about various schools, we might be able to answer them for you, but we can't do all the footwork that you need to be doing... If you've got any more specific questions, or if you want our opinions on specific programs, or if you want to know what we think is important when it comes to choosing an engineering program, we can give our own opinions, but this isn't the best place to get strengths and weaknesses for all the programs you're looking at.

There are a lot of really good college guides out there, though... Fiske's Guide is one that comes to mind. Your college counselor or local bookstore/library will probably have a copy.

yeah, if you are applying to caltech, mit, stanford for engineering, you may want to look into harvey mudd. it isn't a safety, but it'll add to your chances of getting into a top program.
