i have nomination interview this Friday, and i want to prepare myself before the interview. how long does the interview take? and what are the most common questions that they will ask you?

I think each Senator/Congressman has their own way of doing things. Basically, they are looking to see if you are a leader. If you are serious about going to the academy and not just going because your folks want you to or because your dad graduated from one. They are seeing that you are just not a shoot em up type of guy. They want to see how you talk. How you carry yourself. They want to see your self confidence and committment. I think there are other threads on this web site that goes over some other ideas. Good Luck--If this is what you want....it will be worth it.

As stated in above posts be neat, DRESS for the occasion, sport coat, dress slacks, shirt & tie & dress shoes. (we had to buy all of this for our son as he choose to live in only shorts & t-shirts when we moved to Reno) Dress code was from the advice of our local Naval recruiter & friend. If you are an Eagle Scout, wear your pin on your lapel. If you are ROTC (our son was not) wear your uniform. Be confident in yourself. Make eye contact. Don't fidget. You NEVER know what they are going to ask. Our son had a long chat with the interview committee about off-roading (in Jeep's) & geo-caching & 50- milers of all things!

If you are confident in yourself, your deeds & your wants for this type of education; you should be more than prepared for your interview.

As we told our son, "No one else has lived your life. It's your story to tell. Tell a good one because this is who you are & this is what you want." We also told him that we love him & will stand behind any decision that he makes.

Just be you. If you made it this far, you are special. Now just go show them how special you are!

Man, I sound like a mother!

Good Luck tlswogh89
P. S. Who cares how long the interview is... when it's over, it's over. There was no set "interview length of time" when our son interviewed. And I should also share that our son was very focused on what his major would be & then we had to work backwards to see who offered that degree. He wants Marine Engineering & Naval Architect & very few schools offer this. USMMA did, he was accepted & that's where he chose to go. He was also accepted at other schools for this major.

Focus on what you want & go get it!

i had interview today. it didnt go that well for me. i dressed well but i was nervous. it was my first interview in my entire life. I didnt know what to expect. i had some good answers and the interviewer said that was noble. however, i fidgeted too much. is that gonna effect my chances of getting nomination? is interview weight that much for a nomiation? btw i only applied for U.s merchant marine academy for a nomination

I would think it's more important WHAT you said and how you showed your determination. Best of luck. Let the waiting game begin!
