About PLUS

My mom qualifies for a PLUS loan but I would rather have my family not take it out and I rather would have 4000 in loans. Is there a way to "override" the PLUS loan?

You are eligible for $5500 in Stafford loans in your own name. If your Mom applied for and was turned down for the PLUS loans then you would be eligible for an additional $4000 in unsubsidized Stafford taking you to the same Stafford loan level as an independent student. But she has to apply and be turned down. There is no way to over ride that.

Your other possibility would be a private loan but you would need a cosigner for that which would probably have to be your Mom. Being a cosigner is worse than taking a loan out on her own name as she would have all the responsibility and negative effects of having a loan in her own name but no control over the loan.
