About Tests

I've signed up for the SAT Math II test for May and have a couple of questions:

Does Carolina make it absolutely necessary to have a 600 or 700+ score? What happens if you don't do so well? (I ask because I postively HATE math)

If so, do you know what kind of Math II score you should have? I want to know what kind of score I should achieve (whether it's in the 600 range or 700 range).

Also, since I'm currently in Spanish III, will I be able to take a language placement test at CTOPS? How difficult are Spanish (or other language) classes at UNC?

Thanks for the help!

I think I got like a 620 or something on the SAT Math II, and that got me out of some of the lower-level classes, I think. Well, for what it’s worth, all I’ve had to take has been one basic stats class and another computer science class that counts for my second “quantitative intensive.”

Also I believe only got a 630 on the math section of the SAT (but 750 and 780 on the other two sections & a perfect essay score).

I don’t know much about the intro language courses because I placed out of them.

heres a link with the breakdown of scores you need on the SAT and the class youd place into

the placement tests for foreign languages are administered online and you have to complete it at least 2 weeks before your CTOPS session. i think i got an email a couple days about it? maybe? haha i dont really remember where i saw it but i know i did. its on the orientation website i do believe.

Thanks!

I found the language placement tests. Can you not take it more than twice? I placed into Spanish 203, but I was so close to 204! Hahaha

hm…they must have changed the language placement test procedure, then. i remember i took the french placement in a huge lecture hall with like a hundred other people, and there was an intense beam of light shining directly onto only my paper, making it nearly impossible to see.

plus, i already had AP credit and they made me take it regardless.

then that night a girl i met slept with this random guy in my room so i had to stay with her roomie. yep–i got sexiled at ORIENTATION. and yet they’re still my friends somehow. haha

do you absolutely have to take the math SAT II test? i would not be able to do well, at all on that, because i only took an IB Statistics class in high school…just wondering. also, on the UNC math placement website it says “Note that Math 116, 117, 118, and 119 all satisfy the General Education Quantitative Reasoning (QR) requirement and are open to all students”. so i would be able to take one of those without taking the Math II?

…statistics comes after precalc, doesn’t it? (i know it does for AP Stats, not sure about IB though)…anyway, all u need for the SAT II is precalc knowledge…

Do yourself a favor and study for the Math SAT IIs.

Man I didn’t love CTOPS. It’s like the one time I considered transferring.

Why didn’t you like it?

Yeah, I hate math, so I’ve purchased a big Barron’s Math II review book. Hopefully, studying will pay off!

I must say, I am a little nervous about CTOPS. Haha

no, for IB, statistics, or “Math Studies” is the lowest math class you can possibly take. i never took pre-calc…(well i did for a little bit, and then i transferred out…). like, i would never possibly be able to do well on the math SAT II. even with studying. i’m kind of confused why they ask students to take it anyway, i don’t want to do math/science at UNC, so can’t i take an easy class for my quantitative reason credit, or whatever?

To be blunt, for some reason, my CTOPS group was filled with dumb people. I had been a huge advocate of, “just because it’s a state school doesn’t mean it’s dumb!” and then I found myself eating my words at CTOPS.

And then I came and never had that experience again? It was bizarre. Seriously, nothing to worry about.

Also, studying will not hurt you no matter what, though not studying is missing an opportunity. Take the time to study for it. You will be glad you did.

so do we have to take the sat II if we have no reason for taking a higher level math course? as in, since i’m majoring in english (and even if it changes, there’s no way it’ll involve math), and have no desire to place out of classes, do i have to take it?

Nah, I actually had a ton of fun at CTOPS (despite my first experience with sexiling haha).

To tell you the truth, I didn’t even want to go to Carolina at all until I went to orientation (I wanted to go to a snobby private school in the northeast that was far too expensive–now I absolutely couldn’t see myself anywhere but here). I’m still really close with some people I met at CTOPS. If anything, you’ll make a couple new Facebook friends and get familiar with the beautiful campus :)
