I have some questions about the significance of the intended major on college apps.

So far, I had indicated on my apps that my intended major was biomedical engineering (pre-med). Now, I'm reconsidering and thinking about aerospace. My question is, if I submit my apps with an intended major of BME but change my mind later, can I still major in aerospace AS SOON AS I start the year? Or do I have to wait? Is the intended major just a way for colleges to know your general plan, or is it something more final?

I understand that whether I'm accepted often depends on the specific college (within the university) to which I am applying, but most of my schools offer both BME and aerospace majors within the same college. Also, I would rather not apply undecided.

Most schools admitted into the engineering school instead of specific programs. UIUC is one of the exceptions. Even if you choose a particular major, more than half of the students change their major before graduation. Most schools just use that data as a survey. Just make sure you are applying to the correct school (e.g. engineering).

Thanks so much, I appreciate it! Do you know of any other exceptions? As for the others, can I change my intended major after I’m accepted, but before the fall semester begins (would it matter?)?

Also, supposing that I did follow through with BME, how easily could I get an MS in aerospace? (Of course, it wouldn’t be the most efficient of ways to go about things, but for the sake of looking at the worst-case scenario?)

There are 3,000+ colleges in this country. Rather than expecting someone to post a comprehensive list you’d be better off going to the websites of the colleges you are interested in and checking for yourself.

Go to each college web site and search for “change major aerospace engineering” to see if it is difficult to change major into aerospace engineering at that college.
