About the Extracurricular Essay

Hey everyone, I'm new here (First Post! haha). Anyway I have begun filling out the common app, and I'm really stuck(ish) on the common app EC essay. There is a whole bunch of information out there about "Writing the perfect personal statement" but really not much about the other short answer question. I guess my confusion lies in the objective of this essay - I have read over the years a few examples of the EC essay and they have ranged from a "I did this, which led me to do that, and now I am planning to do this, and here is the impact of it all" linear essays, to more amorphous creations that are more like a story, or a condensed personal statement.

Does anyone have any ideas about what the objective of the EC essay is? Is it honestly as simple as "Just tell colleges about an activity"?

I have a "draft" done of the EC essay and would like some feedback - I really just want college students and above to read/critique (Its the internet...).

Thanks in advance.

hey, a whole lot of views but no responses :frowning: anyone, anyone have and ideas?

Ive written up a draft for myself as well. I know you wanted college students, but I can take a look at it. I’ll send you mine as well.

I originally tried to write a mini personal statement in there but then I found out I way exceeded the 1000 character limit. So, I just wrote mine as “tell colleges about activity” with a short reflection of why I enjoyed that extracurricular (mine was tutoring). I think the linear method would probably be better than a personal statement since there’s not much space to write. I think you could fit more substance about what you do that way.
