I will only have 2 years of a foreign language by the time I graduate high school. I read on collegeboard.com that I need a minimum of 3 years of a foreign language to attend Wesleyan. Does that automatically mean that I can't go to this school?

I would suggest that you go to the Wesleyan web site and carefully review the requirements for admission. I can tell you from the class of 2011 statistics most of the accepted students took four years of a foreign language. That does not mean that a qualified candidate won't have a chance of acceptance but the more well-rounded an applicant the better your chances as the competition is sure to be just as tough this year as it was for hs grads of 2007. You should definitely try to visit the school and do an overnight if you are interested. That's what convinced me what a fantastic school Wes is. I can't wait to get to campus in one week!

That doesn't really answer my question. I've looked at the Wesleyan site before and I couldn't find anything about requirements. Collegeboard.com states that in order to get into Wesleyan, I need 3 years of one foreign language. So, does anyone know if I really need 3 years or not, since I will only have 2 by the time I graduate?

I think that you should try contacting someone at the admissions office about this, as they will be able to tell you better than us. I think that the answer is most likley yes, if the requirment is 3 years and you only have 2, than you will not be considered for admissions, but maybe they make exceptions for unsual circumstances or something.

Princeton Review (princetonreview.com) says that Wesleyan requires 3 years of a foreign language and recommends 4. I agree that you would need to be able to explain some special circumstances that have kept you from fulfilling the requirement.

Nobody here can tell you for certain whether the language requirement will get in the way of an acceptance. But you should probably stand out in some other area, like math. The requirement for math is 3 years, the recommendation is 4, and Wesleyan is known to pay special attention to whether a student takes calculus or not.

Perhaps you could take the next level of foreign language at community college over the summer and tell Wesleyan of your plans (i.e. college, projected course.)

There is no requirement to get into Wesleyan. You don't need to have some minimum SAT scores or some minimum amount of years of math or foreign language.

To be a very competitive candidate, however, you will want to have taken 4 years of foreign language, math through calculus, and all three of biology, chemistry and physics. These are three benchmarks that the admissions committee does look at specifically; they also will want to see that you've taken AP/honors classes as opposed to lower level difficulty classes whenever it was possible to do so.

These are RECOMMENDED, not required; not all admitted students will have them and you don't need all of them to be admitted. So apply anyway and see what happens. Also, you will NEVER be penalized for not taking something your school didn't offer.

There is no one specific thing that will ever auto-disqualify you (except perhaps failure to graduate from high school, but even that could probably be negotiated under certain circumstances). There are many things that will make your chances of being admitted very low, but nothing that will out-and-out disqualify you from admission
