I’m an international student who’s planning to apply to Bates as an EDII, but after I’ve finalized my decision, I found out that the deadline for the interview request was the 15th. I still sent the admission office an email requesting an interview, but there’s no reply. And on the school web site it is said that the school is on the vacation until 1/1:(

I heard that Bates takes the interview seriously, so i’m kind of worried if I don’t get a chance for it… Would it seriously affect my admission?? and also are there some students who did not take the interview but was admitted??

Hi dlwlsrl - I’m wondering the same thing. I’m the mom of a hs senior who is applying to about 20 schools regular decision, some of which we were planning to visit and interview with after the applications were submitted, finances prohibiting trips till then. I guess in our minds we were kind of counting on his ED admission ED, based more on legacy than on GPA/score reality, which we now see much more clearly since the rejection came two weeks ago. Because of our being kind of blinded by this, we’re in the position now of just making the 1/1 deadline for regular admission to 6 of my son’s schools. I know this might sound odd, but I’ve been operating under the assumption that interviews would be granted after we get the apps in, not just before the application deadline. Can someone please, please tell me if I’m way off on this? Schools my S is applying to, in order of admissions deadlines, are: 1/1 deadlines: Connecticut, Bates, Trinity, Hampshire, Boston Univ., Univ. of Rochester; 1/10 deadline: George Washington; 1/15 deadlines: American, Clark, Drexel, Haverford, Skidmore; 2/1 deadlines: Goucher, Gettysburg, Dickenson; 2/15 deadlines: Muhlenberg, Allegheny, Ursinus; Rolling: Pitt and Juniata. I’m going now to check the individual websites but I can’t believe a counselor or friend wouldn’t have told me this and I’m panicking at the moment, so I thought someone who reads this might respond quickly if possible.

For Bates, my daughter interviewed on campus in November, since she knew she would probably apply ED2 if not admitted to her ED1 college. But if your son is applying RD, you are fine, because you have until Feb to request an interview.

You will have to check the websites of each of your schools individually. In many cases, you may have to request the interview; it will not be automatic. I think one of the most important considerations for your son will be to demonstrate interest in the event that he has been unable to visit and/or interview at any of the schools to which he applies. When prioritizing visits, you can look at each school’s Common Data Set to see to what extent they consider demonstrated interest in the the application review. I know that for Bates, demonstrated interest is very very important. At the information session we attended, we were told “We hate to waste an admission.”

Another thought - why is your son applying to so many schools? If the list is cut down a little, he will be better able to articulate his “fit” within each application. It may be very difficult to really excel in all of the supplemental essays and explain to 20 colleges that he is a “fit” for all of them. As long as you have a few “safeties”, perhaps you would be fine with 14 or 15 total?

I’m getting worried since it’s said that Bates takes the interview seriously. I really want to know how this would affect my admission:(, since i think i won’t be able to take an interview until 1/1.(The school’s currently on vacation and not answering the emails.) I’m also wondering if they could provide interview in South Korea (where i’m from).
