So I heard that the school of Journalism has a student run TV station and radio. However, do they still have a ny faculty guidance? I am just curious how you land jobs in the field or internships if there is no faculty to supervise these broadcasts. How do you know you are actually doing it right?
The facilities are great!

I know that one of the faculty used to be the station director for the Indianapolis PBS (public broadcasting station), and one of the other ones got her BA in film from Columbia Univ in NY and her Masters in Communication Arts from NYU’s Tisch school. So, I’m presuming she has some experience with NY television broadcasting as well.

These are the only two faculty members I’m familiar with from the Telecommunications department–so maybe others can fill us in on the other ones (note that the TV station is run through the Telecommunications department, not the Journalism department). I don’t know who runs the radio programming.

Also, anybody in any major can volunteer to help out with the TV station. A few years ago the station manager was from the business department (I’ll bet that was a voluntary internship that looked good on the resume).

I guess what I am trying to find out is, if you’d like to become a broadcast journalist, and IU allows you to experiment all the aspects of the field despite not having an actual Br. Journ degree, who would be supervising besides the students volunteering? How do you then end up in internships and in future jobs in the field if there is bo faculty to oversse what you’re doing right or wrong?

These organizations do have advisory boards who oversee what they are actually doing and putting on the air (don’t want to violate FCC rules, you know).

Here’s the link to the advisory board for the TV station:

Here’s a bit more info: (some of the noted alumni of the program are listed at the bottom of this link–obviously an incomplete list since it doesn’t even include Jane Pauley or Dick Enberg–Indiana’s two best known telecommunications alumni)

Trivia note: Jared Fogel, who represents Subway in all their commercials (and used to weigh 425 pounds before starting his diet) is also from Indiana University–but was not a telecommunications major. He actually did his dieting and lost all the weight while attending IU-Bloomington. Here’s a link to his story: [CNN.com - Jared the Subway Guy, superstar - Nov. 17, 2003](http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/17/subway.guy.ap/)

thank you so much for all the time you took to send me al these links. I will certainly look into them later today.
