About WesFest...

Do most acceptees bring their parents? I just want to get a full feel of the school-- my parents understand that it's completely my choice. I just don't want to be the odd one out-- with parents or without.

Thanks!

My parents are planning to come one day for Wesfest, I'm staying overnight and then they're picking me up. I don't think it really matter whether you have you parents with you or not, do whatever is most convenient. I think a fair number will have their parents with them for part of it simply because they're driving/flying there together. Also, there are parent panels and things do it's not like you'd be with them the entire time. hope that helps

If your parents are coming, they will probably be in a hotel somewhere. However, YOU should make sure you stay with students on campus.

I agree with what's been said: either way is fine, just don't stay attached to your parents the whole time! If you haven't visited Wes before, you could go on a tour and such with them, and then split off and explore on your own...and make sure to stay on capus overnight :D

waitlisted students cant attend wesfest, correct?

I checked the Wesleyan website and on http://www.wesleyan.edu/admission/admit/wesfest.html it says that they "invite all admitted students and their families to visit Wesleyan." To my interpretation, I think it is only for the accepted students-- sorry.

After carefully reading their overnight form though, it says, "Overnights are scheduled for one night only - there are no exceptions." Does that mean I can only stay for one night throughout WesFest?! That would really suck because I already booked my ticket for Wesnesday through Saturday!... Help anyone?

Ace23, are you a minority? If so, they're having a special open house thing where you can stay overnight wed-sat. If not, ummm, maybe you could try calling the admissions office and tell them you're coming from far away and need to stay longer.

Ace23: I don't know if they only scedual one night for students at WesFest, but I 100% garentee you can find someone to take you in unofficially. If you have a livejournal, you could ask on the Wesleyan LJ. And I know people who just showed up on campus with no one to host them (because ED people don't get hosts through the school), and were taken in by random students. Wes kids love prefrosh!

i've taken no official prefrosh this year for wesfest so that I can be sure to house some poor stranded unofficial prefrosh :)

also, there's a quite good chance that if you sign up for the first night of wesfest, your host will be willing to let you crash in their room for the remainder of wesfest.

as for parents - they may want to come and experience wesleyan from their own perspective, and especially if they're paying for it, they certainly have a right to see if they think it's a good place for you to be. however, most of the fun of wesfest and the parts you will appreciate most will be when you get away from your parents and interact with students on a peer level.

This is really, really true. And if they, for some reason, can't have you crash on the floor for the rest of teh time, I still doubt they'd leave you stranded, they'll probably find a friend who's love to take you in.

Do you need to be invited to the minority thing?

Can prospective students easily attend classes on the Friday of WesFest?

Will you miss much if you can only be there on Friday night and Saturday?

When are the dates for the minority program?

1) yes and no. wesfest and soc weekend run side by side but nothing is stopping you from hopping around. you don't have to choose one over the other; in fact, don't!

2) yes. yes yes yes. and it's strongly encouraged, too. they'll give you a list of classes you can attend, but realistically, if you find a class chances are you can sit in on it, even if it's not on the list.

3) i was only there for about 12 hours and had the time of my life. of course you'll miss things, but in my case it was still worth it.

4) i think it starts a day or two before wesfest and then runs to sunday, but i'm not sure.

wow thanks Ishuku :D

the dates for SOC are 18-21
I can't wait

I'm SOC-- I think you have to be invited. Invitees received their decision slightly earlier than everyone else for some reason. I also just recently called, and I'll be able to stay for the entire duration of the SOC program just fine. =).

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Just another voice that not having an "official" host will NOT be a problem. You'll meet other prefrosh, they'll have hosts, blah blah. It all works out and it's fantastic.

Will I be missing a lot if I cannot stay for the last day of wesfest? I'm planning on coming in and staying through the 19th and 20th, but I can't seem to find a good flight out except around noon on the 21st.

almostmidnight: it's fine if you don't stay the whole time. Most people don't stay the full three days...just come for as long as possible :)
