About Work-Study

I was awarded federal work-study, but am a bit confused as to what it actually is. I know that under the program I have to work a certain amount of hours per week, but my salary cannot exceed the amount of the program. So does that mean that I can't work more than what I have to at that particular job? Can I have an additional part-time job off campus? I ask this because under the program my weekly salary wouldn't be that much.

Your are correct....you cannot work more hours in a WS job than the amount awarded in the program. Yes, you can get an off campus (or even an on campus but NOT work study) job in addition to WS. However, I would caution you not to overextend yourself by working too many hours especially your freshman year.

I have a guestion!!

Does the money you earn from the work-study program have to go towards your education expenses or can it be spent on something else?? or is it automatically deducted???

At my D's college, it would go into her pocket to be used how she liked.
I'm not sure that's true everywhere, though.

work study goes into your bank account or pocket- you get a paycheck and you can pay for books or other expenses as they are incurred.

Does FAFSA award work study or the school itself?

Work-study comes from the school. When the school gives you your financial package, it could be a combination of grants (not-to-be-paid-back), loans, and work-study.
